8BA Pan gasket install help needed
 

Need help with pan gasket installation. My first Flathead but I have rebuilt other engines successfully. This 8BA reassembly was started over a year ago and sidelined when I had a rotator cuff reattachment surgery and rehab. I left it with the major assembly done except the pan and intake. Best Gasket set. The rear seal was trimmed with the supplied thickness gauge and the front, white rope type seal was not trimmed. I lost the instruction sheet for trimming the seals. I have 2 books with differing methods. One from the H and H flathead folks shows the pan gasket laying flat on to of the seal protruding out of the block. The Vern Tardell shows the pan gaskets trimmed around the protruding seals. I chose to trim them. I trimmed the pan seals to the thickness of the pan gasket. (This is where I should have asked for help) I used Gasgacinch sealer and installed the pan with 18 ft lbs on the pan bolts. The pan needed to be squeezed down to fit the front seal around the crank shaft. Not sure how much was because the seal ends were to long. The result was the pan gasket squeezing out. My main question is how much should the seals be trimmed front and rear and should the pan gasket be cut around the seals or in between the mating seals. Or some other technique.

I think the picture with the cutout is for a modern type seal.

IMHO I trim around the seal. I only use a little Hylomar Blue for sealant. If you must use RTV just snug up the bolts and then leave it for 24 hours for the silicon to cure., otherwise it acts as a lubricant and forces the gasket out.

You did it the best way by trimming around the seals. The gasket damage I see in your photo looks like it happened because the bolt to tight. I always tighten the bolt so its snug by hand never used a torque wrench to tighten pan bolts. Another detail I do sealer is only placed at the ends of the pan gasket that's been trimmed around the seals. There's no need for additional sealer along the pan gaskets.

Thanks and I never (except this time) use a torque wrench on the pan. Any suggestion on how much the front and rear gasket should stick up above the pan and block?

Personally I never measured how high the front rope gasket sticks up. Since I prefer to use the the gasket sets made by Best gasket the rope seal height has always been the correct length. Their gasket set also includes the rear graphite style rope seal. And the kit to cut it to the correct length so once again never had a need to measure that dimension.
