New manufactured coolant pump question

The impeller to housing clearance is .003" on the Ford pump. It's .050" on the new one. See photo. Just wondering if this will affect the flow and how.

That's a considerable difference between the original and the new one. Closer is certainly better the difference in volume moved between the two might be substantial. Any time I rebuild a water pump the impeller clearance to the housing is no more than .010 to .015.

Joe, contact "Skip" Haney on Fordbarn about rebuilding your pumps using his curved impellor that pumps more water. He also cleans and paints the pumps with a cast iron finish, installs new bearings and seals and mounting gaskets. Well worth the $$. He rebuilt my 8BA pumps a few years ago and they are still working fine.

First, thanks for the responses. .050" seems way excessive, but the pump is in and after a road test, the temps measured with a heat gun at the sensor are what they were previously, (the old pump was dripping at the shaft).

The Bill Hirsch engine paint is a good match and I also did the road draft tube, crossover pipe, gravel shield, new motor mount, and cleaned the manifold heat valve, (it works perfect) while I had her apart. Also, a lot of degreasing.
Happy with the result. I'll keep Skip in mind.

Thanks, well you know what the "old timers" say about ground straps on a 6 volt car.

Just had a thought. When the gasket and iron thickness at the block are added and factored in, maybe the impeller to housing dimension is a moot point.

Joe makes a good point.

Here's more info. on flathead water pump flow rate.
