1934 steering box educate me before i dig in?
 

so I have a 34 wagon, non running (im working on fitting the wood)
a few days ago i moved it and during that process i "lost" steering.. IE all the sudden the steering wheel lost ability to turn the wheel.

I know I am going to need to pull the box, what typically fails in these early boxes? ive only ever owned 40 and later boxes, (and one model a box) and I have NEVER taken one apart.


i found a exploded view of the box over on the hamb.. assuming this is correct

what are the first things to look at?

May be as simple as a missing or damaged key in the steering wheel to shaft connection.

I wonder if the previous owner forgot the woodruff key for the steering wheel and it finally came loose? Maybe the worm came off of the shaft? Just a bit of trivia. The steering box looks like a '32 but the bolt pattern where it bolts to the frame is clocked different. If you are looking for parts be sure to get the right ones.

If the lock is not engauged, and there is no play, side to side in the gear, then something is jammed in the gear which would be very unusual. Have you eliminated the lock being engauged?

When you say "lost steering" do you mean you can turn the wheel and nothing happened or do you mean you can't turn the steering wheel?
