Busted Door Glass - How? 2 Attachment(s)
When the window was rolled up after the Fourth of July parade, this is what we saw. I happened with the window rolled all the way down. Why? The door was not slammed any harder than the usual firm shove that it takes for the door to latch.
I have purchased an OEM replacement glass for a '41 Mercury from Ebay. It is the narrow door coupe size and looks to have the same measurements as the Ford narrow door coupe. That is, about 17.5" wide by 15.5" tall. What will I need to bed the front edge chrome strip and the bottom channel? Any secrets to removing and replacing? |

Re: Busted Door Glass - How? My old '36 3-window had a habit of breaking the passenger side window for no reason. After it happened the second time, I replaced the window channels and was careful with their installation. I never had a problem after that. I really don't know what fixed it, but have found that "starting from scratch" sometimes has its advantages.

Re: Busted Door Glass - How? Does yours have window stops in the bottom? If so be sure you have a rubber pad on the stop.

Re: Busted Door Glass - How? I would remove the door panal and see what might be the cause. The channel may stop short of the bottom or some debris might be left in the door. Look for wrong panal fasteners, they could be interfering with the glass.

Re: Busted Door Glass - How? I bought glass setting tape from Bob Drake when I installed a new vent window on my ‘41, it comes in different thickness so you’ll have to measure your channel.

I am getting NOS door glass and will measure when I get it before ordering the glass setting tape. |

Good question. I assumed that since the windshields are safety glass that the windows would be also. I will check when it arrives next week. |
Re: Busted Door Glass - How? I am sorry to see. Good luck. I have seen this happen with other vehicles. Puzzling.

Re: Busted Door Glass - How? removal of the door glass is a little tricky..
you need to pull the interior door panel (which means pulling the garnish molding around the window. then drop the window down a little to allow you to pull the regulator away from the channel. then rotate the glass back and down to get it OUT the bottom of the door. as for why it cracked. it may be a stop, it could be the channel is bad at the bottom that said. I HOPE the NOS glass you bought is good. I had a PILE of nos glass from the 1950s that I caught at an auction and nearly every piece had fogging / delam. on my 40 woodie I choose to go with tempered safety class for the side windows. |
Re: Busted Door Glass - How? my 40 Ford broke a side window due to a screw holding the window fuzzy channel coming loose. When driving it moved back and forth enough to crack it almost same as your,
