Looking for waffle pattern body insulation

I'm trying to keep my 1940 Ford ForDor DeLuxe as original as possible during my restoration. I've searched many of the usual restoration supplier's catalogs for the original type of Waffle Pattern Body Insulation, but the ones that carried the product in the past either no longer list it or state that they don't have any in stock when I attempt to order it. The original insulation sheeting that was located under the rear seat carpeting measures 3/16" thick, while the material under the rear set and from the tool storage area in the trunk measures 3/32" thick. Can you give me any info on where I might try finding some? I need a 3' x 3 1/2' piece to do the under-carpet areas (3/16"thick), and another 3' x 3 1/2' piece to do the under seat and trunk tool storage area (3/32" thick). I also realize that I might need to laminate some 3/32" and 1/8" thick pieces together to get the proper thicknesses.

Not sure if this helps, but this company makes these insulation kits. Nate

Thanks, Nate, for the lead, but you have mistaken me for someone who is looking for a cool/quiet ride. I'm trying to maintain the originality of the car. It was my grandpa's daily driver for 27 years. I'm the second owner. We liked it hot and noisy. :)
I can find lots of that "newfangled" stuff in most catalogs, but I'm holding out for the old original type.

At one time Bob Drake sold that style material. You might call to see if they still have it.

TJ, I did try Bob Drake. They confirmed that they discontinued carrying that material 5 years ago. Seems like I'm always a bit late. Need to order things when I first think of them rather than later when they are no longer available.

Look closer at quietride's website. They do offer the original chicken track pattern firewall insulation that you called waffle pattern. The material is "newfangled" but the pattern is the same. This is as good as it gets in the 21st Century.

Alan, I saw that product. But it’s for the firewall, not for under the rear carpets, rear seat and trunk area. See my original post for specifics. Thanks though. I’m still hoping I can find some of the right material out there somewhere.

Like you, I well remember Bob Drake carrying the waffle pattern insulation material years ago and should have bought some back then. If you find a source for it, please post the info. Thanks.

Re: Looking for waffle pattern body insulation

I found something close to it. If you're talking about that waffle pattern like that's in the truck lid (like on my 1940 Deluxe). There's a vintage Pontiac vendor here in SoCal that carries the material. It's pricey for how much you get, and the pattern is smaller than the original for a Ford, but it's close enough for me considering it's discontinued everywhere.

The original is basically thick roofing paper stamped with the pattern. If you can stamp the pattern yourself, you can buy a huge roll of it at Home Depot for much cheaper.

I have some of the original type material that I bought from Drake years ago. P.M me please.

Re: Looking for waffle pattern body insulation

Please keep the suggestions coming. I’m in touch with Tom regarding what he might have available, and I’m intrigued by the suggested use of roofing paper. But there may be others looking for what I’m looking for that can benefit from any leads or suggestions that might be offered up. I will definitely post what my final solution turns out to be. Thanks to all who have posted so far.

Re: Looking for waffle pattern body insulation

The big difference is that the waffle stuff was run though embossing rollers to give it more body and rigidity during the manufacturing process, otherwise it is a lot like roofing felt or tar paper if you will. This link shows Owens tar paper that appears to be embossed. It is likely attached to the moisture barrier plastic that way.

A quick search for "waffle pattern insulation" turned up a antique auto vendor in Vancouver, WA that lists a product that looks exactly like the material that Drake used to carry (see attached photo from their online catalog). However, a note says: "This item is not available now, however we are accepting names to add to a list to be notified when we can get or produce this item."

This vendor seems to cover several Ford and GM vehicles, using several different websites. All the sites list this same insulation product (as being unavailable). Curious.

Re: Looking for waffle pattern body insulation

John R., Thanks for reminding me. I had found that listing at the Fabulous Fords web site early in my search for the product, but failed to leave my contact info with them. I emailed them with a request to notify me if and when they ever have it available. Thanks again.
