Three 1940 Fords and a large parts hoard
 

Hi all, my father has been collecting 1940 Ford's for probably 40 years at this point. He's 81 years old and not doing well, so I'm preparing to help my mom liquidate his cars and parts. We're located in the upper midwest, and was thinking of engaging Yvonne Vanderbrink to sell everything at auction. He has bins and bins of carefully catalogued parts, he really focused on the smaller items like Columbia parts, correct fog lights, switches, knobs, etc. Lots of NOS stuff and the used stuff is very nice. I realize the market for these parts is way down vs 15-20 years ago, curious if anyone has any other suggestions? Trying to take pictures, descriptions, etc of all his parts would take several lifetimes, so I'd rather not go down that road.

Frequently auctioneers get the parts all mixed up and missing from their correct cars. I would suggest contacting the Early V8 Ford Foundation first for help id'n and properly sorting those parts. In fact my estate may well all go to the Foundation. Newc

I second Newc's sentiment about auction houses. Nothing in particular about your Vanderbrink that I know of, just auction houses in general. They are, after all, just another used car salesmen, right? And about the collection of parts, that'll go as a lot pennies on the dollar if you go the auction route. I know you don't want to get too involved in it, but the bottom line depends on the degree of your efforts. You may call for bids from the antique Ford parts dealers in your area, and to get hold of the local V8 Club Regional Group for assistance, but to just turn it all over to auctioneers is bad business.

Very sorry that your dad is not doing well. May God Bless him, you and all his family.
It would be nice if you could find an alternative to an auction so that you get a fair return and other 40 Ford owners could have the chance to buy what they need.
This is a dilemma that will be happening more and more as time marches on.
Would it be possible for you to pay a fellow "40 Ford person" to list and sell the parts on Ebay, Fordbarn and other sites? That person would get a percentage of each part sold. Trouble is, it would take time. Hope things work out.

I agree with the guys. I had a friend who went the auction route and remember something…….they could care less about the parts……their interest in is the money. End of that tune !

Sorry to hear this about your Dad. Many of us on this site are going or will be going though this. It is especially hard if there are no friends or family that have the same passion for our interests in these cars.


In lieu of pictures, you could do a walk-through with a GoPro camera and post and provide a link on YouTube of the movie. You would get knowledgeable people here viewing and get more money for the parts.

I've been to some Vanderbrink auctions - they do a decent job as an auctioneer. You'll certainly have many items sell for a fraction of what they're worth - and some will sell for more than you'd expect . . . it is how auctions work! LOL

Given that you're on this site, would be great to really take some great pictures/videos of the cars and everything he has bought/organized - such that folks can see what you have. This might go a long way to having somebody want to purchase the cars and parts that go with them. It would sure be nice to see your Dad's collection go to somebody who really cares about these cars as he does - so they end up on the road as he most likely intended (and not just parted out and spread across the various auction sites).

I wish you, your Dad and your family the very best . . . you seem like a solid Son, you're fortunate to have each other!.

BTW, where are you located? I am heading from Ohio to South Dakota in a few weeks on US 90, might be able to stop by and see what you have and give you some suggestions?

The house sits up on a ridge. It's a downhill slope all the way to the water. Never had the water come close to the structure .... only about halfway up the slope twice in thirty years. Neighbors not quite so lucky. We're good with the water. I don't fish, anyway!

The one advantage of an auction is that EVERYTHING is gone when it is over, unlike garage sale/epay/want ad type selling, unless you can find an individual that will buy everything. Settled my parents and uncle's estates with auctions--as posted above, some things go for less and some for way more than YOU think they are worth. Lots of work to properly set up an auction, but at the end of the day, you are done. Good luck.

Vanderbrink isn't the auctioneer to use for carefully catalogued parts. Hordes of cars, sure. Parts, no.

There are multiple examples of her auctions where the parts go for essentially pennies.
