HELP !! 1929 Sport Coupe Rumble Lid Installation

Re-assembling the body for this car now that the body is back on the frame.

Before installing the support under the curved inner panel, the rumble lid opened and closed perfectly - no interference, and the latch mechanism worked very well.

Since installing the cast iron curved support ‘arm’ under the curved inner panel, the rumble lid rubs against the curved inner panel as it has been pushed up by the support arm.

The curved inner panel is a repro part, but seems to fit very well.

Two questions:
1. Can I just loosen the support arm (which also supports the spare tire carrier) and hope that the curved inner panel relaxes a bit ?

2. Another option may be to grind the base of the support art to make it sit lower under the curved inner panel ?

I don’t want to leave he support arm off as I think it’s needed to provide support for the spare tire carrier.

Thanks for any advice !
Jim

The original panels had a relief in them in the area where the support arm goes - seem to recall it was about 1/4" deep. There was a thread a couple of years ago where a fellow came up with a pretty easy compromise solution - I'll see if I can find it.

Found the thread:

Randy,
Thanks for this reference. I have the original steel support arm that goes under the curved inner panel, but the panel is a repro part without any relief or depression to accommodate the support arm.
I need to think about how to remedy this…..

I'm going to have to rework the tail end of my 1929 Sport Coupe one of these days and finding good parts is tedious. None of the reproduction parts are exact reproductions. The brace that fits the panel below the deck lid is only available for the taller 1930/31 coupes and it isn't the correct gauge of metal. The inner curved and outer panels are not accurate reproductions but can be made to fit with work and ingenuity. The curved brace in aluminum may not hold up as well as the cast iron part. It's no small feat to get an old rumble seat coupe or roadster to have a proper hind end.

Hello, have similar problems on my 31 roadster, that used repro panels, replaced the quarter panel and also the upper and lower deck panels , they didn’t even fit the other repro panels had to cut ,fit and weld , and really not happy with the fit gap is still larger in middle of deck lid to lower panel, next project if to attempt to rework deck lid .
