1939 Mercury convertible. Common parts with a sedan.

Hi guys.

Long time, no post....

I have a 1939 Mercury with a reasonable body but otherwise completely "run down", it needs EVERYTHING done. I decided my best bet was to buy a reasonable sedan to use for parts, and I found a very good one which I am about to get.

Basic question is: How much of the sedan parts can be used for the convertible?

Of course I suppose bumpers, grill, lights, taillights and many none specific trim items, same as interior components like instruments, handles, steering wheel, all dash items and all the car's mechanical components... but some specific questions come to mind:

Chassis. Is chassis identical (or were convertible chassis reinfored?). I am guessing the mechanical components are all the same.

Dashboard, is it the same between a sedan and convertible? I mean the dash structure itself... trim and instruments I am sure are the same.

Body. Are hood, front and rear fenders the same?

I am attaching a few pics... you will see a good body, not damaged and with no rust.... but as mentioned, it needs a lot of parts and everything done to it... and I intend to do it. I just love these Mercs!

Any input, greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Victor

Can’t help you with the parts, but it looks like a worthy project, keep the pics coming.

You would want to look for anything from a 39 Mercury Sedan Coupe....The convertible was made from the Coupe via cutting the roof off. SO you will need all the trim from the door back from a Coupe, it will fit exactly!!! Everything forward of the doors can come from any 39 Mercury. Door handles/hardware is the same. Rear fenders I am not sure??? Pretty much everything else you asked about will transfer over

I've got a pretty nice grill IF you need it? AND "depending" on what all is broken on the hood ornament/latch....I "might" have what you need there too!!!!

Thanks! The donor car I have, a sedan, is really very good. In fact, were it not for the fact that it's sacrifice will help build a great convertible, I would keep it as it is! It has a real good grill, handles, an engine that purrs like a kitten.... great car, really.

Glad to know everthing forward of the cowl will interchange I hope the rear fenders and the dashboard might be the same also!

Thanks again,
Victor

Yes, the dash will transfer over, no problem. That’s a nice 4 door town sedan. Not sure IF you are pulling the engine and trans BUT “IF” you are I’d take a few measurements and think about just taking the front fenders loose from the sedan and convertible and just swap bodies!!! It’d be a lot easier and the frame and trans # would match IF the trans in the 4 door is still original to the car!!

Re: 1939 Mercury convertible. Common parts with a sedan.

Great! Thank you very much, guys!

I knew most trim and bits were the same (except for the two door versus four door items), but with your help, now I know the front fenders, hood, rear fenders and dashboard are the same. That helps a lot with the project.

Basically the idea is to get the convertible body to the sedan chassis... using every possible part of the sedan, since most everything is in reasonably good condition on it.

Yes! Gorgeous car, isn't it?

Mine was originally some sort of medium blue with tan interior, but I am going to keep the light beige-gray the sedan has, and use the mahogany or darker red interior and black top with vermillion edging, as the pic you posted has there specified. That is the idea, so far.
