1950 Merc hubcap and beauty ring removal 1 Attachment(s)
Seems like a simple question, but I do not know the technique for removing the hubcap with beauty ring. The one method that I know would work involves a heavy handed approach then an internet search for replacement hubcaps.
Does anyone have a good process for removing the hubcap and beauty ring that does not damage them? |
Re: 1950 Merc hubcap and beauty ring removal I found that this Bob Drake 'Wheel Wizard' works well...

Re: 1950 Merc hubcap and beauty ring removal I use a nail puller that is flat and is about 1 1/2" wide and about 10" long
with a tapered edge that will slip under the trim ring and then slowly pry the trim ring off. The other end of my nail puller is bent in a "L" shape with a tapered edge that will slip under the hubcap and pry the cap off. USE some plastic under this end to help save the wheel paint. . |
Re: 1950 Merc hubcap and beauty ring removal Lanny,
Please post a photo of your "nail puller tool" mentioned above in your post. |

didn't do any good. I went into Harbor Freight though and found the Same nail pullers as the one I have. They show a pair (one shorter, one longer) nail pullers for $3.99 for the pair. The handle has a slight curve to them, and then they have a 90 degree bend at one end and Both ends have a sharp taper on them. Hope I described them good enough for you to find the picture at Harbor Freight. Lanny . |

1950 Mercury Hubcap and Beauty Rim. So easy to damage the Beauty Ring without the correct tools. |

Here what I bought for my ‘41 from Amazon, but be gentle with the hard rubber hammer when putting them back on.

Re: 1950 Merc hubcap and beauty ring removal sixseven, on my '37 i use what lanny uses, with a wrap of elec. tape on the tapered jaws and under the rocker on the one end so as not to mar the wheel paint. Tom.

https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...p;d=1722646275 This Hubcap was originally fitted to 1967-1969 Plymouth Barracuda, Valiant and Satellite models in the USA. When Chrysler Australia were looking for a suitable Hubcap for their Centura models, they chose this one. However, they made a slight modification, a change for the better. Notice the indentations around the edge to allow easy removal. This is the only hubcap that I have seen with this provision. It is very difficult trying to remove Hubcaps carefully without damaging the Hubcap or the paint work. I know that this is not Ford related, but thought that it was worth while mentioning. |
Re: 1950 Merc hubcap and beauty ring removal What everyone is missing is the original question. 1949/51 Mercury hubcaps and trim rings are DIFFERENT. The hub cap is larger in diameter and the trim ring has no teeth. 3 nubs on the wheel hold the hub cap, the trim ring is sandwiched under the hub cap. To remove them you need to insert your pry tool between the trim ring and hub cap. Not an easy thing to do.

Re: 1950 Merc hubcap and beauty ring removal I use a "tack puller" and put some shrink tubing on the end to keep from scratching the paint. The small nail puller is also a good idea as it is wider than the tack puller and would work better on the trim rings.

Re: 1950 Merc hubcap and beauty ring removal I also use the nail puller like Lanny uses for caps and beauty rings on my '37. Tom.
