Brake problem
 

My brother in law has a 1929 roadster. I think its called the cross over that does the brakes when the pedal is pushed. It is hitting the wishbone when activated. Could the wrong one be on there. And can they be purchased somewhere.

Frame sag at the rear motor mounts can cause that. If the
car has float-a-motor mounts the rubber could be bad.

So if you have an assistant step on the pedal the curved bar rotates until it hits the assemblies below, right?

Replace bearings at the ends. Adjust rods so that the levers are straight up and down before the brake peddle is pushed. After the rods are adjusted, the levers in the front should be 15 degrees towards the front and the rears 5 degrees towards the back. After the rods are adjusted, adjust the brakes using the adjusters on the backing plates and do not change the lengths of the all the rods.

If you still have a problem after all that, or before doing the work, look at another car and compare the cross shaft with yours.

Gene you are correct. As soon as the pedal is pushed the cross over moves and hits the bottom of the wish bone.. We compared it to my car and there is plenty of room between it.

This looks to me more like the transmission/torque tube is sagging, say from motor mounts not being where they are supposed to be. Look to be sure the front motor mount is installed correctly (sometimes well meaning folks install the center spring of the front motor mount on top of the frame cross member, which pushes the front of the engine up and the rear down). You can also loosen the rear motor mount bolts at the flywheel housing, jack the transmission upwards, then tighten the bolts again to lift the rear of the engine up.

But yes, definitely check the cross shaft bearings as well.

JayJay has a good point. Check the motor mounts, both front and rear. Compare with your car.

rear motor mounts or sagging frame. or float a motor mount will do that if the rubbers are bad.

Makes sense, as he can't get the crank into the engine for timing purposes.

Check the rear spring for sag. Do the spring eyes bottom out on the axle housings? If so you may need to re-arch the rear spring or find a replacement.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. When i get back to his house we are going to try what was suggested . Hope something works out for him.
