source for mohair upholstery fabric 1 Attachment(s)
I was recently horrified to find that the fabric on my 1930 Coupe seat had sustained some damage whereby the mohair fibers are missing in some areas. I'm not sure how this happened, but I'm told that it is most likely moth damage.
I'd like to try to replace the damaged areas but I cannot find a source for the fabric. Complicating the issue is that I'm not sure what the original color was called. The upholstery was done some time in the early 80s by the now defunct LeBaron Bonney Company and unfortunately I don't have any record of the work. I dealt with Mike at Classtique Upholstery, but he seemed to want to redo the entire seat bench and back rather than sell just the fabric. Unfortunately that isn't in the budget right now. If anyone has any suggestions or another source for the fabric I'd appreciate the guidance. Thanks! |
Re: source for mohair upholstery fabric In my opinion... leave it as it is OR replace the entire seat upholstery. An attempt to match the this will not work out well.
Think of the moth damage as "charm". |
Re: source for mohair upholstery fabric Mohair is difficult to source as it is without worry of a color shade match. After many years, the original color of the fabric fades anyway. Check with Classtique if you want Mohair. They sell by the yard if your so inclined.

Yes - Mike would want it done right. As others mentioned matching a patch will be impossible. He does list the material by the yard - https://www.classtiqueupholstery.com...are-yard-goods He was out of what my car required and I waited over 6 months until his new supply came in. At the price of real mohair (160-310 yd) I'd be tempted to locate a close substitute at the fabric store if it's not a fine point restoration. |
Re: source for mohair upholstery fabric Thanks, everyone, for the replies. I guess I'll learn to live with the damage for now with a plan to redo the entire seat sometime in the future.
I'd still be interested to learn of another source for mohair fabric. When the time comes I'd like to attempt the re-upholstering myself. |
Re: source for mohair upholstery fabric Google is your friend: https://www.georgesmith.com/us/product/mohair/
https://www.decorativefabricsdirect....bric-s/561.htm Prices are comparable but the color may not be correct. Classtique is only game in town for correct Model A interiors at this time. S |

Re: source for mohair upholstery fabric Thanks, @ModelA29. I've bookmarked that site for possible future reference, but seeing the prices for just the fabric versus the Classtique endorsements from other users I may end up just having the work done by them.
