Hand Opersted Tachometer ??

There is an ad in the Late V8 for sale for a Hand Operated Tachometer. In all my years that is a new one for me. What would this be used for

Hand operated tachometer was used in equipment repair and testing. You held a friction end against a shaft to see how fast it was running.

38coupe nailed it. I atone still in its cardboard packaging my dad bought new when I was a kid many moons ago. Still works great

I have one of those I inherited from my grandfather. He messed with motorcycles in the 30s and 40s maybe that what he used it for??? He didn't have anything else I can think of he would have used it for.

We had a hand held tachometer in a beautiful wooden case with several attachments such as a cone shaped tip to go over the shaft of a motor, a ball shaped tip and a couple of other attachments. Wonder what happened to it?

we used these as HVAC techs. until the digital ones came out. had to rpm all the fans on the job and many times in less than ideal conditions.

I have the same one. We use it at our big gas engine/tractor show in August to prove who REALLY has the slowest running engine on the showgrounds.

Even though they are old tech, and we were given digital and later photo tachs, I always carried an old one as I trusted them over the “ modern “ type. Saved my ass more than once when doing a job in East Bumfuck and batteries in the digital one crapped out and it was a long drive to nearest store.

I had one in a pile that was sold on the auction, scrap man got the bid. Next day I saw it smashed in the driveway, musta fell out when the were loading the pallet...no one cared.

Still have one in the shop though!

Smashed in the driveway.... A sad commentary on the kind of stuff we have used, collected and enjoyed over the years. Glad you still have one!

My boss had one way back when and would set the rpm of the shafts in the 2 row corn combine.
