Re: Condenser yes, I used this method when I was having trouble finding a reliable condenser,
Have that sorted now but will leave it as it is. Lost some points at the nationals for the incorrect condenser, but told the judges that with an original one fitted, I would not make back to the hotel. Lawrie |
Re: Condenser 1 Attachment(s)
Never used one but Tubman over on the HAMB makes highly rated condensers.

Re: Condenser Lawrie get the one from Dennis, it will be the only one you’ll have to buy.

Re: Condenser I'm sure "Lawrie" remembers, but for the rest of you, we went through this together with an experimental .36 micro-farad version of my "Trash Can" and it did not end well (the internal capacitor was just not up to it). I'm sure he doesn't want to go through this again, especially with the shipping costs and customs issues involved. I'm sure I don't.

Hi Lawrie. I sourced good quality US made condensers from Michael @ ThirdGen. Best R. |

Re: Condenser Out of curiousity, what do they give you when you buy a condensor for your cessna or beechcraft? Maybe they use mags, but they have condensors. I have always heard that condensors aren't real fussy about application. I believe I have used condensors from an old briggs and stratton in a truck. Anyways I'm quite sure most pilots wouldn't put up with crappy condensors that don't last but a year or two. And what about the military. Can they get something really dependable for their gas powered equipment? Let's not forget something from bosch for a beetle or volvo 122, or denso for a toyota? Just thinking out loud here, that's all.

Re: Condenser Condenser issues aren't limited to flatheads. I have a converted Chevy distributor in my 8ba. The condenser died and I replaced it with a Hecho in Mexico one made by Standard. It lasted about a week and crapped out driving into a swap meet. Of course my spare known good one was back on the bench in the shop. Luckily I found a guy selling NOS Standard ignition parts. Got one made in USA and installed it at the meet. So far so good.

Re: Condenser Quote:
Is there a range of something like 'microfarads' that we could compare to search for a common, more reliable part? Maybe even something that is not used for an automobile. I know very little about electricity because I can't see it. |
Re: Condenser The Ford Script condenser on my 38 Ford has been going strong since 1989.
|
Re: Condenser I have had 3 condensor failures in my flathead powered vehicles in the last 8 years. Two while driving and one no start in town. I am pretty gun shy about what is normally available out there. I am at the stage of setting up a cast iron 8BA distributor for my new project and I want it to be reliable as possible. I did a little searching on the net and here on the barn. Seems that Tubman's 'trash can' is what keeps showing up so I guess it's high time I send him a pm.

Re: Condenser I have not tried one, but Vertex magneto condensers a have good reputation for flathead ignitions.

Re: Condenser I use Vertex magneto condensers - usually the bigger one of the two. They are expensive, but have worked well for me for years.
