Head Studs or bolts with aluminum head Head studs are a better arrangement but aluminum heads can stick on over time. Bolts are not such a good arrangement but the Head can't stick on. Which do you use and why? Any thoughts or considerations?

Re: Head Studs or bolts with aluminum head Iron heads can seize also ! Seal the studs into the block, lather up the stud bodies with anti- seize, use iron or aluminum, a Ford fix for leaking Diesel cylinder head gaskets is to replace bolts with stud !

Re: Head Studs or bolts with aluminum head Based on the measurements shown in the video below, If you use a torque wrench with anti-seize you may over-tighten by 100% or more.

Both bolts and studs do the same job but the wear is very different on the threads in the block Studs especially good quality ones will resist stretching and keep the threads in the block lasting longer There are many old wives tales about over torquing the threads or using certain lubricants and causing thread pull out If you use well defined specifications and practices you will probably not experience any problems, if it has been “repaired” by some improper methods all bets are off If you really want to educate yourself get a copy of the machinery handbook and research fasteners and clamping forces IMHO studs wherever possible for high loads J |
Re: Head Studs or bolts with aluminum head Thank you for your help. I will use studs with anti seize on the shafts and make sure that no anti seize goes on the threads.

Re: Head Studs or bolts with aluminum head Seal the threads on the studs on the end that goes in to the block, some holes may have broken into the coolant passages
