How to disassemble a Columbia rearend Was hoping for info on what it takes remove the axle tube from the Columbia rear end
I have removed the bolts from the tube section and the bolts that bolt directly to center section (sorry if my terminology is bad) The outer tube will not come off because of the shifting arm sticking out the window. The inner part of the Columbia that bolts to the center section has come loose and I have gotten around 2” from the center section. I hate to beat on it to get it to move more because I have never taken one of these apart. Honestly I have never taken a factory banjo rear apart either. My winters QC is the closest I have come to this type of rearend. I am trying to do a inspection before selling it, it should be a factory 37 Lincoln zephyr, I pulled from my zephyr but it does have juice brakes on it but still the wide 5 drums, so they may have just updated the backing plates. Thanks Dave |
Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend You need to remove the regular LH housing from the banjo. Then, undo the bolts holding the crownwheel. Then you can remove crownwheel and LH axle. Then you can see the spider gears etc, move that assembly until the spider cross is orientated with the cutouts in the housing, then you'll be able to remove the spiders and RH axle. Then the rest of it will come apart...

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend Where are you located?
I know a couple people who might be interested in the axle, price depending on condition. |

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend Not that close, but parts could be shipped.
If you have the factory controls I am very interested in them since I will be putting a Columbia under my brother's 36 Zephyr at some point. |

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend 5 Attachment(s)
So I got it apart, thanks for the advice!
Gears all look good IMO, I don't see any damage |
Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend 2 Attachment(s)
Couple more pics
So it seams to have a IMO strange gear ratio the ring is 40 tooth the pinion is 9 tooth so that would be a 4.44 ratio? |

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend Yes, 4.44:1 is standard ratio with Lincoln Zephyr. I believe, after looking at your pictures posted, that your diff is actually 38-39 Lincoln Zephyr...it is a hypoid rear, which first came out in Zephyrs in 38, prior to that they were the same configuration as Ford V8

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend The 36 Zephyrs used 4.33 ratio with a Ford type banjo. That apparently wasn't a deep enough rear gear for the low torque V12 and heavier car, so 4.44 and 4.55 ratios were used. The hypoid type banjo was introduced in 38 to allow a lower hump in the floor of the car.
When you decide to sell the Columbia please let me know as I am interested. You will need three more posts before private messages to other forum members will work for you. |
Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend Thanks, I am new to the Lincoln world

Re: How to disassemble a Columbia rearend I seen I needed more posts to private message so I guess this counts as 1 lol
