33 Speedometer glass removal

How do you remove the glass from the speedometer on a 33 Ford? Thank you.

Just the glass or the assembly including the chrome-plated glass retainer/bezel? Which brand is the speedometer, Delco, Stewart-Warner, or Waltham?

Re: 33 Speedometer glass removal

It’s a Delco with a chrome ring that appears to hold the glass.

Re: 33 Speedometer glass removal

I assume that you want to remove the glass so that the ring can be re-plated. The glass is held in place with a couple of soldered points. Unless you are familiar with soldering next to glass there's a good chance that you will break the glass when you try to melt the solder. The glass is flat and easy to replace. Use crazy glue or something comparable to hold the new glass in place once the ring is back from the plater.

Be sure and ask the plater to mask the inside of the ring or it won't fit back onto the speedometer housing.

Thanks David, but I wanted to remove the glass to clean the face of the speedo. It’s rather yellowed. I guess I’ll leave it be.

If that's all you want to do, follow Ted's suggestions in #2 above.

So if I removed the chrome ring the glass will come with it? The two solder points are on the ring and not the speedo body?

Re: 33 Speedometer glass removal

Yes. Depending on which speedo you have there could be a thin inner ring that secures the lens to the outer bezel on the inside. If the face of your gauge is deeply brownish yellowed it could be from Nicotine and that is impossible to remove.

Some of the original speedometers and gauges have a very silver tint face background and some have the yellow tint that looks like smoke stain. You can't take the yellow tint off!

Be careful cleaning the face and numbers. On some units the paint on the trip and mileage numbers have become very fragile and can become flakey. I encountered this recently when I had Rusty rebuild my 32 SW speedometer. I decided to leave the face alone as I liked the patina for the style of my truck.
