Taxi Cab??

Hi all. It's been a while since I've been on here, but thought I'd share this. I was watching a YouTube video by a hot rod channel I follow and they showed a clip of this car at Hershey last year. Note appears to be fordor, but it has the coupe pillar that no actual fordor had. Rare taxi?

Yes, that Taxi is from the Don Bivens estate and was for sale online as well as Hershey.

Correct.

Another identifying trait of the taxi is 3 hinges on the rear doors instead of 2.

Damn rare. Super rare. It will cost a lot of money to restore, but it is absolutely worth it. Great car.

What's a "coupe pillar"?

Thx.

Re: Taxi Cab??

It is (was) a neat original 29 Taxi. Stuart has since sold the car.

The taxi cab had the coupe pillar that was not part of the usual Fordor models in 1928-29.

Here's the "normal" 1928-29 Fordor/Town Sedan/Town Car/Cabriolet cowl, which was simplified in the 1930-31 Model A's. The taxi cab's cowl with the coupe pillar really stands out from this design, doesn't it?

I have the same question as Jim/GA: What is a “coupe pillar”? I’ve studied the photos but I don’t know what I’m looking for.

Re: Taxi Cab??

To be absolutely correct in the spelling, the word "coupe" should have an accent mark over the "e" reflecting its French origins: coupé. It's supposed to be pronounced "koo-PAY". So, that curved, raised portion on the cowl of most 1928-29 Model A's (non-wooden bodied) is called a "coupé pillar" for some reason only the FoMoCo people from that era can explain. Actually, it can be seen on closed Model T bodies from the 1920's, too.

Re: Taxi Cab??

Marshall shows it very clearly- the curve vs the straight drop.

thx Marshall

Jim, et/al;

Since this might not have been clear enough in Marshall's post, -a Coupe Pillar is Ford's nomenclature for what many erroneously call the 'A' Pillar or Windshield Posts -or the Cowl Posts. I have attached a PDF where Ford's engineers listed it as a Coupe (-w/o the apostrophe :D) Pillar and a Coupe Pillar Cover. The Coupe Pillar should not be confused with the Hinge Pillar which is actually below the Coupe Pillars.

Re: Taxi Cab??

Look at the transition between the cowl and the door hinge part of the two bodies.
