Failed 6v Coil
 

Last year I purchased a Standard Coil and it just failed. The coil is open when it gets warmed up. I have found the on a cold start it will work but after a few minutes with 6V applied there is no spark.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good quality coil to purchase? Ed

Ed, you didn't share where you got the current coil. Model A vendor? NAPA store? Other national franchise? I'd assume most Model A vendors sell the same coil and I have not heard of widespread problems.

You might try FS Ignitions for something better as they sell coils all day long with their electronic ignition systems. They have a reputation for high quality products.

If you shake your new coil and can here liquid sloshing around. That coil won't work being mounted upside down (normal for a Model A). Follow Bob's advice.

I agree, call FSI. Be sure you order an epoxy filled coil.

I still use Echlin ignition products. NAPA still handles the line after it was purchased by Standard Motor Parts. The 1.5 Ohm primary type works for 6-volt. Model A coils were high tension tower down and they used tar as an internal insulator.

Just be careful to insure you always turn the ignition OFF. Many a coil had been killed by inadvertently leaving ignition on with breaker points closed. A coil turns into an electromagnet when energized and they will overheat.

I agree with what rotowrench says. One that was less than a year old died on my streetrod too. Hoenestly I think they are mostly made in China, and not made very well.

I switched to the FSI coil that is epoxy filled never leak and it has greater output, better spark

I have used Bosch high performance coils. But be careful when ordering online because there are fake brand name products out there that do not have the quality of the real name brands.

I recently bought an "Oil Filled" Standard Motor Products coil for application on another of my antique cars. The instructions with it didn't make any mention of recommendation/restrictions on mounting orientation.
So, I wrote to their technical support asking if the coil could be mounted upside down.
This is the reply I got: "Ignition coil can be mounted in any orientation."

Of course if the seal fails and the oil leaks out, then obviously the coil will eventually fail.

I bought this coil on Amazon, they had a special for (3) at $29.95! I guess they saw me coming and cleared their inventory. Ed

I use a Pertronix Flame Thrower 6 volt epoxy coil on my '31 roadster. I bought it off eBay some years ago for around $50, I think. It did seem to perk up the idle and acceleration some.:cool:
