Cogged fan belt

I just ordered a cogged fan belt from McMaster Carr. It is 43 inches outside circumference and 21/32 wide at the top. I like the fact that it is 1/32 wider than the stock 5/8 because it will accommodate worn pulleys. McMaster Carr is expensive and the shipping is too so I try to buy more than just one thing at a time.

The cogged belts are original type and will bend easier around smaller alternator pulleys.

Neil, By my experience, you are exactly right about the need for a cogged belt on an alternator and the wider belt being better. Even with one of the wider belts, I found that with a worn pulley, the "teeth" of the belt were still running on the base of the Vee and that made a terrible noise. I turned the belt inside out and ground a little off the teeth. End of problem.

The most popular cogged belt is part number BX40.

I thought I was loosing my water pump until I noticed the belt's teeth were leaning in one direction so I bought a new BX40 and the sound was gone. I'll try your method of shaving the tooth height down with a flapper wheel on the old BX40 only because the price of them is insane. About a buck an inch.

I usually get my belts and such from RockAuto. I like the Dayco belts "Double Cog".

Rock Auto has ignition and other parts for Model A also.

I bought a brand new BX 40 Gates belt on eBay for 16.95 and free shipping.

I get my cogged belts from NAPA. They have to order them for me for next day delivery but no issue with availability.

Rockauto are good to deal with for international shipping. You can mix and match parts to fill a box from location A or B to optimise cost. If they send the wrong thing, they will pay for shipping back. Mostly use it for plugs and timing belt kits for modern vehicles. My brother in law has discovered it for his Volt.

Re: Cogged fan belt

One reason that *x belts are more expensive is the length(s) are very tightly controlled.
These are made to be used in multiple belt applications for higher HP.
They do work well for the small pulleys that the alternators need.

The one from McMaster Carr is the same as the BX40.

Rock Auto offerings are pretty cheap (I need the extra length, so it is a BX41)

Sorry about the small print! The Gates is $13.21.

I use BX42, BX40 doesn’t fit. Didn’t know there was a BX41!
