Any other repop tail pans other than ems?

1 Attachment(s)
My ems tail pan doesn’t fit great. The gap around the trunk is off. Wondering if anyone else makes one that I could try before I slice and dice this one up? It just needs to go up about a half inch but there is no more room for it to go up another 1/2”.

Any other options out there? I’m regretting cutting the old one off and should have just patched what was bad but it was pretty clear this has been replaced at some point prior (and not done great…but it was better than what I’m working with).

Thanks!

Yes, the trunk lid is a little boogered up but the general line is still there for reference.

I don't know of any place that makes reproduction sheet metal that is accurate. Your best bet is to have a good metal fabricator make what you need or if you have the skills do it yourself.

I don't have the skills to make my own. Anyone know of any shops in Colorado that do this kind of work? I may farm it out. I've done body/panel repair and replacement on other cars but this one has me a little frustrated (thus looking to see if another pan fits). Or I may attempt to dice the panel as needed (which I also have done in the past but on a car that was getting bodywork after). Im keeping the patina so id rather no filler and I want it to look like it never happened...which may cost me some $$$ but that may be what I have to do.

Panel replacement is way beyond my skill set so I farmed out the rust repair on my Ranch Wagon using EMS panels. Good thing I did. All in all they fit OK but as with all repair panels they needed some adapting. The mislabeled floor brace is another issue.

I have replaced numerous trunk panels. The best was from Drake, a long time ago. Carpenter also made a very nice pan.
Be aware, both will require a little toying with to make the fit proper.
My advice? Try to source the pan from either of those companies.
EMS is total crap. You now know that as well.

For some reason (probably cause I was looking from my phone) I did not notice Dennis carpenter has this part. I ordered it. We'll see. I was pretty impressed with the inner fenders I bought from them so I'm hopeful. But with 2, I should be able to make it happen. Still going to shop around for someone to do it for me so if anyone knows anyone good at rust repair (I have some other work I may farm out too) in Denver or surrounding area, let me know.

Kube, got the headlight floor switch. Thank you!

The issue I had with both Drake and Carpenter pans in the past few years is it seems the curve where the rubber seal attaches (near the bottom) was not fully formed. That made the tool tray opening too wide. And, subsequently, the plate in the middle that the male latch is screwed down to is "short".
If you have the tool tray (wood) covers and they fit before, be certain to try them before any welding.
Also, fit that center piece before welding.

Just for information on manufacturers,

Carpenter had one made that looked semi-hand formed. Raw metal.
Drake had one made in Taiwan, black coated. The best of the bunch. Carpenter may have ended up with this one when the 40 coupe project transferred.

EMS has theirs, heavier gauge metal, approximate shape.

Regardless, any of them are better than a flat sheet of metal, a mallet, and a sandbag (unless you have a client with DEEP pockets)

I found EMS to be narrow. I used late Carpenters. Could not find a Drake. Ems could be modified. Newc

I agree Karl. The "old" black ones from Drake were darn near perfect.
