Loose door handle 41 Super Deluxe Coupe

I recently purchased a very nice 41 Super Deluxe long door coupe. Th PO stuck a king's ransom having this car professionally restored. My wife went to enter the passenger side, only to have the door handle come out of the door in her hand. Upon inspection, I found a threaded well for what I took to be meant for a set screw. After acquiring and installing an appropriate 12/24 set screw, I found that the handle would not turn. What am I missing here ?

You probably will have to remove the door panel and see what's wrong with either the door locking mechanism or the handle mechanism.

The handle is held in by a rivet head screw not a set screw. Only the lock has a set screw, so you need a short screw with a head on it i.e. long enough to thread into the boss on the handle but not so long as to jam the square shaft. Hope this helps?

could it of been that the door was in the locked position ?

John, just a thought. The door handle came out when your wife pulled on it. You replaced the set screw used to anchor the assembly and the lock does not turn now. Perhaps the old owner left out the setscrew intentionally in order to access the car. Remove the set screw and see if the entire handle turns allowing the lock mechanism to turn. If it works the problem is in the handle assembly.

John, on 9-12-23 someone posted about a seized set screw that anchors the handle in his door. If you care to find that post it might be helpful to you in some way.
