Sta Lube Gear Oil
 

I am assuming that since all you can get now is GL-5 is OK. It supercedes GL-4 in still the 85-140 weight. This is for my 1939 trans and rear gear. Anyone care to enlighten me. Thanks.

You know what they say about assuming? I would not use a GL5 oil in a synchromesh transmission unless the manufacturer guaranteed it was compatible with yellow metals.

That's what Im trying to figure out. NAPA says that's all that's available from StaLube (the gl5)

Look on Amazon, they still show Stalube GL-4. O’Reilly’s and other suppliers can provide GL-4 products. I looked on CRC’s website and could find no mention of yellow metal compatibility. Send them the question about your application.

Do not use GL-5. It’s safe to say instead since our cars are not as common anymore, we can no longer find stuff on-the-shelf. Order GL-4 if you have to. NAPA and Advance Auto Parts have it.

NAPA seems to have StaLube in 140 GL4 Not 85-140 is what I was looking for in the GL4

Show this to NAPA. Part number SL SL24239. Although a few months ago it was more like $45.

140 weight is okay for warm weather. The 140 doesn't shift properly in cool weather in my 39 transmission. I found that the 85W-90 is good year round.

Interesting. CRC teck line got back to me and said their (StaLube) 85-140 GL5 are safe for yellow metals.

I'm going with the 140 StaLube GR4. Won't be driven when it's cold anyway. Thanks for all the help. You guys always come though.

O'Reilly has 65-140 GL4, or at least they did have. I bought a gallon for my Model A several months back. Ask them...
