Sun visor Conundrum
 

1938 Conv Sedans did not originally come with sun visors, yet at some point they were added to my car. Oddly, the small attachment holes are different on left and right side.
I wouldn’t mind having period correct visors, and would like to utilize the existing large holes.
The diameter of each large hole is about 0.5” and available depth is about 1.5”
Any thought on what visors would work?

The triangle pattern and hole in the header look like generic 1950s through 1970s sun visor brackets to me. I'd ask around in your local car club to see if anyone has some used brackets for you to try out before spending any money on nice parts.

IMHO, the most elegant option (and highest cost) would be to use 1939 convertible dowel/visor brackets and visor arms. The two screws on the 1938 dowel are in the same position as two of the three on the 1939 dowel/visor bracket. You would still be faced with dealing with the extra holes.



I make reproductions of the dowel/visor bracket and the late 1939-40 visor arms (there was an early version of the 1939... See the club book).

My '48 has visors with three screw holes like that. I'll check the protruding depth. They may require more like 2" of depth.

I went and measured one, it only required 1 1/2" but its at an angle, so more like 1" if measured straight in. Large hole would be about 1/2" dia.

Paul, the triangular holes are between 1 3/8” to 1 1/2” apart on passenger side.
Rectangular holes on driver’s side are about 1 5/8” apart.

38 - I checked my cars and neither fits the dimensions you mentioned. The TBird has only two screws so that's out. On my 54, the holes are 1 3/4 inches apart.

It seems the reproduction 1935-1948 sun visors are out of stock everywhere. I'm trying to find a left hand sun visor for my truck and would be happy with an original or a reproduction. I guess it's another indication that reproduction parts are starting to get hard to find. If anyone has a suggestion of where I could find one, please let me know.

It's on my shopping list for the upcoming Hershey flea market, but it's a long shot these days.

Late 1939 used the same arm as 1940. We have those in stock. Also the springs.

I found a mounting that may work with the late 39 arms.
Do you have the outside diameter of the arm where it engages in the mounting bracket?

The visor arm where it engages the bracket (late 1939-1940 convertible) is a # 0 morse taper. This works out to about 5/16" on the bottom of the bracket and 1/4" at the top. I presume the taper is to friction lock the arm in position across the full arc of the visor arms motion.

Found that 38 truck visor arms fit, with no spring protruding from back, and they cover holes nicely. Brown material is very close to perfect match of door panel material.
I’m very happy with results!
