Close Enough to Ford Maroon

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows of an off-the-shelf spray paint that is pretty close in color to Ford Maroon

Over the years there have been many different versions of what is called Ford Maroon. I’ve seen original paint which is so dark that you can hardly tell it from black, to a muddy brown/red, to a “true” maroon like your avatar shows. Many car parts stores ( my local NAPA for one) can mix rattle cans from their extensive sample book. Suggest you try there. I suspect you’re not trying to find the true color as much as duplicate what you have (maybe for firewall or something).

25 years ago I wanted the same color as ford maroon but could not find it any where but
somebody gave me a formula and it worked OK. it was 1 gal. international harvester red,
50 1/4 oz of black, 14 1/8 oz of Ford blue.I painted my 31 pick-up and it came out OK.
Sorry I don't know how to post a picture.

I have a 31 Canadian Built Standard Roadster that still had some original paint on the firewall under the coil bracket, junction box, etc. It was a deep maroon and after doing some research I found that there were some colors used on Canadian built cars that were not used in the US. According to the Judging Standards, Ford Maroon was available, as a "special order" color on 1930 US DeLuxe roadsters. Maybe it was more widely used on the Canadian built cars including the 31 Standard Roadsters. Anyway my painter was able to match up the color at the Shur-Fit Auto Parts store where he buys all of his paint. It was called Deep Red and to my eye looks very close to the original paint that was on my car. They list it as a "Ford (N America) color. and is maufactured by PPG. If you need any urther info, let me know.

My car is Painted with a 1980s Ford maroon. I think it is a bit lighter than the 1930 color

We should think about this for a minute. Do we really know if the color is an original ford color? If it is original it probably faded over the years. I would go to a paint supplier or body shop and have them shoot the color with a paint camera. Then they can match the color as it is today. Some paint guys can match the color by eye.

My Victoria had a substantial amount of its original paint on its firewall behind the gas tank and also on the backside of gas tank. It is a lighter Maroon than commonly seen on cars with Ford Maroon. I suspect that Briggs, Murray and other makers of complete bodies had significant variations in Ford's stock colors.

Very interesting. One of the members of my club has an original Victoria with original Ford Maroon and I have to look very closely to tell that it's not black.

Here is the formula supplied to me by Mitch. We mixed up a pint, and did a test panel, and it matched the MAFCA colour chips perfectly. The photo is of Mitch's Blue ribbon Tudor.

If your looking for touch up paint, your local auto paint store can color analize and mix it in a spray or can.

I would be careful with what they are doing with that paint sample. (analyze)

Where is Mitch's? Is that shop in New Zealand or USA? I wonder if Mitch's would sell me some of that same color.
Thanks,
Gene

Typically colors are matched after a picture of the color is taken with a spectrophotometer, then a computer (or the Spectro device) offers the closest color match paint code. So I wouldn’t be concerned with the ‘analysis’ as it is pretty benign as a process. The worst case scenario is a bit of buffing to get to a clearer color sample prior to taking the picture.

You can take the picture or the paint code right out of that picture and walk into any paint store in the US that sells PPG and they should be able to pull up the color formula and mix it. I would look for a place that has the Deltron brand as that is what is pictured, but it likely can be mixed in other brands as well. That specific can was mixed at Bill Flannery Automotive—which is a PPG distributor. Mitch’s appears to be the ‘customer name’.

The first thing I do when I finally get the right colour is make a note of the formula and paint the lid with some of the paint. That at least gives whoever follows, a sample of what they are trying to match. Those colour matching scanners work much better on light colours than dark ones, I have found.

The new scanners are magic. A good paint store will take 1/2 dozen readings and average them together. Then the computer doesn't just give you the closest color but will actually create the formula needed to match your paint exactly. Big suppliers may have an idiot proof machine where all the tints are plumbed to a nozzle over the mixing base and the computer spits the right amount of each tint. Smaller shops will have a bunch of cans on the shelf and they pour the tint in by weight - you need a good guy doing it this way to get it right.
