General brake drum question

Brake drum out of round.

Can I get them cut and not replace the shoes?

Re: General brake drum question

Certainly. Just readjust the shoes after installing.

Re: General brake drum question

The maximum amount of metal allowed to be "cut" is .060 in.

Re: General brake drum question

Commercial shops are legally limited to 12.060". Have seen much more cut in Old drums. Newc

You should add "Unless otherwise marked". Some of the reproduction drums are designed to go .090 oversize and marked as such.

Thanks guys.

Someone said even brand new drums should be cut. This true?

Only to ensure they are concentric.

Here's an .090 in. example. MT Brakes by Boling Bros.
Their concentricity is right on the money.

I have to say, those look like nice drums. Just glad we can still get them. The ".090" is a real plus. You'll never wear 'em out.

Unfortunately, this is one of the very few REPRODUCTION items any more that is actually a quality item, and that also LOOKS like quality. Also unfortunately, these are a generic drum (and Bendix-type backing plate) that ONLY fits the pre-1949 spindles and rear end.

BEWARE ..... Speedy Bill's sells a drum that LOOKS very much like the Boling Brothers drums, but it AIN'T the same American-made drum by any means. The Speedy Bill drums ironically have a reputation of the braking surface being NOT ON CENTER, and of being out of balance.

Re: General brake drum question

The out-of-round condition may be an indication the drum is too thin already.
