40 Ford moving while engine out I pulled the tired flathead out of my 40 yesterday to eventually swap in a rebuilt one I purchased. I want to clean and repaint the engine compartment while it is out. Currently I have a bottle jack under the transmission to support it. With the torque tube setup and mounts on the transmission would it be safe to remove the bottle jack and roll my 40 out of the garage so I can power wash the engine compartment? Or would that put to much stress on the transmission?

While possibly not necessary, why chance it? |

Re: 40 Ford moving while engine out I've done what Kube is describing. I did it on a driver quality '47. I put a trash bag around the bellhousing end of the transmission to keep any water out of it while I degreased and power washed the engine bay. I then prepped the engine bay and firewall for repainting.

Re: 40 Ford moving while engine out I use a short flat bar with a piece of wood on it across the wishbone and let the trans rest on that, bag it to clean up around it make sure it is high enough so you do not break the ears off the back trans mount!

Alan makes a very good point about not breaking off the ears off the transmission mount.
Easy to break and not realize it. I used king pin locking pin retainer bolts on the rear mounts. |
