new starter
 

Hello folks
while sorting out my old genuine starter from the 34 Ford I found the Bendix spring is broken. As the starter is 6V and the car now runs 12V I thought about an upgrade and found this:

Now this starter is cheap and if it fits the 34, I would not need to have all the work done to the old one. Can you verify that this starter would fit my 34?

Edit: just found out that my 34 starter has got 10 teeth, this unit only has 9 so would not work....

You'll hear folks say that the 12V conversion is hard on the Bendix because the starter spins faster. There might be something to this as I did in fact break a Bendix when I converted to 12V!

I wound up installing a different starter drive head as I read they didn't break:

They are a bit fiddly to install (you need to compress them to fit) and have a 'rattly' sound, but so far so good.

vincent: Those "new drive" starters don't compare to the quality of the original style Bendix.

Do yourself a huge favor and and convert your present 6V starter to 12V. It's easy to do.

When I needed a new 12 volt starter for my 8ba most all the ones I found came with the new enclosed Bendix which is a PITA to install in an 8ba. Mac Vanpelt had one with an original made in USA Bendix. Joe's Antique Auto, who is my go to source for parts for my '39 p/u only listed a 12 volt starter with an enclosed Bendix. But after calling him he sold me an original Bendix for the starter and the starter without the new style Bendix. That was several years ago and the starter still works perfectly.

I'm with Pete. Gear reduction starters are great performers. I have one on my Model A and my 34.

Hello Pete, thanks for the suggestion.Maybe I should go this route.
There are two types available, one specially for the french flathead but probably only neccessary if the french pan is used. My french engine with french flywheel and 81A/59AB pan works with the original Ford starter. Now I need to find a source in EU for this Powermax 9507 starter.
