y block ticking

272 started making what i thought was a manifold leek, so i poured tranny oil down the carb and the smoke exposed the leek at exhaust manifold wich is now fixed .
noise still there
i can rev engine 3500 rpm in neutral , NO NOISE then soon as i let clutch out and put motor under load noise appears and is obvious when acccellerating

spark knock? timing?

Re: y block ticking

It's probably not the engine. I would suspect one of the u-joints or transmission. Do you have the bottom flywheel cover installed on the bellhousing? It's not a good idea to drive without that because a rock can fly up in there and get kicked around by the flywheel.

Re: y block ticking

How are the motor mounts? If under load and the motor rocks, it can open up an exhaust leak that is not there when not under load.

Re: y block ticking

fly wheel cover has been off for 7 yrs

next is motor mounts ...

Re: y block ticking

I once had a tick on my 56 292 that finally turned out to be one of the rocker arm shaft mounting bolts loosened up allowing too much clearance on the rocker arm assembly. Listen at the valve cover to see if that can be eliminated.

I would think you would hear it at idle speed also if either a loose rocker shaft mounting bolt or a woefully loose adjusted rocker arm. He said it makes no noise at idle.

Re: y block ticking

yes and i even blocked the wheels with emergency brake on and loaded the motor " no ticking" only while driving

Re: y block ticking

i'll check rocker shafts

Re: y block ticking

Only when driving takes the noise to behind the flywheel. Those U joints may seem OK, but I would bet the price of a U joint that one is bad.

ok ill yank the drive shaft
stay tunned

Re: y block ticking

Tell ya what. Leave that flywheel bottom cover off and drive down a few dusty roads. That flywheel acts as a fan blowing dust right at the starter drive. It'll be no time and your starter drive will be stuck in the disengaged position.

Re: y block ticking

Put car on jackstands under the rear axle. Run it in gear, accelerate while applying brakes to load the engine. Have a helper listen under hood (or elsewhere) to locate the noise.

Re: y block ticking

I’ll put cover on when I’m sure rear main is not leaking on my refreshed 272
Off to check u joints

Re: y block ticking

drive shaft is off
everything is free ,smooth and no slop so i greased it now reinstalling
so now its to run car on jack stands
or check rocker shaft and make sure its tight to the head ...

Re: y block ticking

drive shaft is ok
rocker shaft and valve lash is ok
i'll have to get help to run it on stands

Re: y block ticking

Are you sure it is not "pinging", caused by poor fuel octane, or incorrect ignition timing? This only happens under the conditions you described.

cvicky 06-22-2023 08:56 PM

Re: y block ticking

sounds like a manifold leak , i'll go at it again tommorow
i'm at 6* maybe pull a bit more timing out
i only use premium pump and i've put a few tanks recently

Re: y block ticking

have a manual choke? if not set choke part way closed and retry. If you don't hear the noise it's running lean.
