Clutch cover question. A friend had clutch troubles and asked if I had a good used clutch pressure plate . I selected a good one and mounted it as a test on a model "B" flywheel using a new disc . All fingers were even at 3/4" so near enough should be 5/8". Fitted this cover to his flywheel and had over 1" finger clearance . Finally did find another pressure plate which gave 3/4" so good to go . My question is if a flywheel is machined to clean it up does this make the fingers more in or out ? My 84 year old brain cant compute on this ! Many thanks to Gurus on the famous " Barn ".

Re: Clutch cover question. John, that would be "out" -or the fingers not pulled down as much. The reason is when you install the pressure plate, as the bolts are tightened and the disc is compressed where the fingers are drawn inward. Since it appears you are suggesting that just the lower disc face area was being machined, then it would not compress the clutch disc as much. Does this answer your question??

Re: Clutch cover question. Some years ago I knew a guy who rebuilt clutch pressure plates for 40 years (RIP).
If I remember correctly he once told me (as Brent said in post #2)) that if only the lower surface is machined that finger adjustment will be changed. He said to always machine an equal amount off of the surface area where the twelve bolts on pressure plate are fastened to flywheel. |

Re: Clutch cover question. My memory, faulty as it is, says that the proper difference between flywheel face and the ring with the bolt holes is 1-1/8” (1.125”)???

Re: Clutch cover question. When you have a Model A flywheel re-surfaced you should take the same amount of material off the ridge where the pressure plate bolts up. The original dimension between the clutch surface and the ridge is 1.123". That dimension should be restored to be able to adjust the fingers properly.
