1930 Cabriolet Wiper
 

Did some of the 1930 Cabriolets come with an electric windshield wiper? Does anyone have pictures or diagrams of what the '30 Cabbie wipers look like?

Not the perfect/authoritative answer…..all I’ve seen are vacuum

no electrics. there are universal electric wipers on ebay quite reasonably, if you want to go t hat route.

Dick, Restoration Guidelines & Judging Standards area 20 page 1, "for the purpose of judging electric wipers, Cabriolets are considered closed models". Owen-Dyneto, Heinze Electric Company & E.A. Laboratories Inc. were the only three companies approved by Ford as electric wiper motor suppliers. 20-2 Windshield Wiper Master Chart shows electric until the end of June 1930 for the Cabriolet. Application Chart shows OD-C3, HA-C2 or EA-C1.
I suggest you verify it yourself from the standards
You can also see photographs, drawings, sketches and get text from Area 20 which has 16 pages pages. There is a lot of information to sort through but I believe it will be helpful.

Thanks rotowrench, that is the web site I have been looking for. I viewed that site a long time ago, but could not relocate it recently. I will save it on my computer now and make copies of it too. My son just purchased a '30 Cabbie and I wanted to be sure I did not sell a wiper he might need. Have a great day, you just made mine. Dick

I learned something new today. Never knew there was an electric wiper, after owning 3 cabs and seeing numerous cars at shows.

If you drive your car, once you have a car with an electric wiper you will not want anything else.

As far as the originals go vs the replacements the vendors offer now is a matter of taste, and to some extent reliability. Besides, in most cases the visor hides the unit.

The one on eBay does appear basically correct. Would have to look at it closer but configuration looks right.
Pricy but that’s about what they go for.

FWIW, the original vacuum type wiper like the one currently on eBay does work fine so long as it is properly restored and has proper lubrication...doesn't take much vacuum to work properly and mine works fine even with a slight manifold leak that has developed.

The real problem with Model A wipers has to do with the downward pressure of the wiper arm on the glass with the 90 year old technology of rubber blade design....but that is a topic for another thread!

Best Model A wiper I can find is my bottle of RainX....LOL

All vacuum wipers that use only manifold pressure suffer when the car is being operated at
higher road speeds. The higher the engine rpm, the lower the manifold pressure. Climbing a hill or passing was always a problem due to the lack of vacuum for operation. In the 8BA era Ford added the dual action fuel pumps to increase vacuum at all road speeds or under heavy load.
