28 Roaster pick up. Will 8BA motor oil pan work?
 

I really like my 28 roadster pick up. It is as cute as can be. I do not like the 4 cylinder motor and the non synchro transmission.

I have an 1953 8BA motor that I would like to install. I hear they will barely fit on the top side. But will the 8BA center sump oil pan interfere with the stock front wishbone?

I have a rear sump oil pan but don't wish to use it.

Put one of the new engines in it, you will be surprised how well they go, and can be made to go just about as good as a stock V8.

The 49 thru 51 Mercury is the best. I should have mentioned only the early 51 Merc pan and bell is same as the 49 & 50. The late 51 Merc has a big cast iron bell with a bottom inspection pan and is designed for a 4-bolt pattern. The oil pan may still work with the earlier bell. Refer to post 7 for details.

My 8BA motor has a Mercury crank so I guess we can call it a Mercury. (4 inch stroke).

Does any one have knowledge if the V8 center sump oil pan will interfere with the Wishbone on the Model A?
Surely someone knows?

On the 8BA family of engines, the pans and bell housings should be kept together since they were designed to fit as a set. The truck bell (cast iron) works with the truck type pan and dust seal. The Mercury pan works with the Merc pressed steel bell housing. These will accept the early Ford type top shift transmissions. The center sump pan and bell housing won't. The starter plates are all different too. Keep truck with truck and Merc with Merc. Forget the center sump.

There is a clearance problem with the tie rod if a center sump pan is fitted. The Merc pan will work with ease and the truck pan will have less clearance but will work. Dropped axles can also be added into this mix but the amount of drop can affect clearance as well. Steering arms may need adjustment.
