Dual exhaust I am putting an 8BA engine in my 48 Mercury convertible. I have already done what is necessary to use my existing three speed tranny and have the 8RT water pumps. I have the original exhaust manifolds and want to put dual exhaust on the car. There is a person on the net that makes dual exhaust for the 48 Merc, but says you must use the original manifolds. So my question is. 48 car with a 59A engine but now I have a 50 8BA engine. Will his system work or what has someone else done to get dual exhaust?

Re: Dual exhaust 59A exhaust manifolds fit the 8BA.

Re: Dual exhaust You should have no problems using the stock manifolds. I haven't had the best experience with prefabbed exhaust.. We are fortunate to have a couple shops in the area experienced doing exhaust on 40's fat fendered cars. They did the exhaust under my 40 coupe and it's perfect. I furnished the mufflers (Flow Masters) and they did the rest in aluminized 2 inch pipe and it was around 400.00. I have also done several of my own exhaust on my deuces but they are easier.

Re: Dual exhaust At a small car show in the 1980s, there was '48 Merc convertible with an 8BA. I said, nice flathead. The lady said, want to buy it were putting a 454 Chevy (puke!) in it next week. The engine had nice Edelbrock 8BA heads , just a stock intake, Fenton cast iron headers with an old chrome on them. The 8BA distributer had been converted to a 59A crab which is a littl bit of work to change the cam. My dad bought the engine, trans, rearend, front end, hydraulic brakes, Merc rims with the '48 Merc caps and trims rings. Four almost new white wall tires all, for $400.00 That was one of our best buys ever. I still have all of that stuff in the garage except for the rearend. I never heard it run but I know it made it to the show that day back in the 1980s, so it was a running engine.

Re: Dual exhaust Thanks for the replies. Now I have some ideas of what I can do.

Re: Dual exhaust Duals run thru the frame holes can interfer with the full travel of the clutch pedal. Check before paying. Newc

Re: Dual exhaust Pay special attention to what Newc said. Check clutch pedal clearance travel while installing not just after the install. A few well positioned blows with a ball peen hammer will solve the problem if all else fails.

Re: Dual exhaust On my '48 Ford, I am running stock manifolds, dual exhaust, and straight pipes out the back. Provides the purest sound possible. The driver has the luxury of controlling the volume, depending on the circumstance. My cabin is insulated.
