speedometer needle removal

35-36 Ford speedometer. Not sure of make as it has no name on face, or anywhere else I can see. It is for Standard or pickup with three digit odometer. How do I remove the needle, is it a "press" on or does it "thread" on? I want to be sure I don't screw it up trying to remove it so I can work on speedometer, clean numerals a little better. Thanks. Lawson

it is a press fit.

You might want to release it from the stop... That way you can determine where it needs to clock to, to get it into the right position on assembly... Having tried to mess with speedo's w/o success, I will be looking for reports of your achievement... Karl

I picked up this tip when I was restoring my 35/6 speedometer. It worked well for me......

Speedometer Needle Removal
What I learned from a speedo expert is:

Needle removal:
Don't use the special "mini prybar" that vendors sometimes supply with their gauge face kits.
His technique is to use thumb and forefinger to gently twist the needle
counter-clockwise and pull the needle up to disengage.

Needle Installation:
Put needle on the pin with slight pressure. Turn counter-clockwise to set desired "zero"
position. (BTW, take note of this position BEFORE initial removal of the needle!) Tap very
gently to set needle in place.

BTW, If you have need, I have a couple of carcasses (and gauges) for parts if they are the same. Stewart Warner and Wartham seem to be the most prevelant. I went through quite a few to find enough good parts to put two gauge sets together with some mix and match.

Re: speedometer needle removal

CA Victoria should be correct for any clockwise rotating movements. Most of the old speedometers had an internal stop for the drag cup so working against the stop is a must. The clock spring that holds the needle & cup assembly to the stop is sensitive as its tension is what is adjusted for speedometer acuracy.
