Pickup bed side rails.

Hi guys. I'm currently in the process of fitting some side rails to the bed of my '29 pickup, using a proprietary kit from one of the usual suppliers. However I find that all the uprights are the same length. Am I right in assuming that the front uprights , nearest the cab should be longer, reaching to the bottom of the stake pocket with an angled cut at the base. This seemed to be the case when I removed the remains of the old wood from the front pocket. Can anyone confirm this. Many thanks.

Re: Pickup bed side rails.

I can't confirm the arrangement of currently available "kits," but I can contribute that the rear/tailgate/channel/pocket has a horizontal metal barrier about 7 inches down (and a oval hole to drain water out the side of the bed) The front has no such barrier - one assumes water goes all the way to the bottom (and rots out the channel.)

But both front and rear have the "hole" which I assume is used with a lag bolt to hold the wood in place. Without this lag bolt one would assume that the front post (if like the rear) would "drop too low" and find the "tapered" portion below.

So I guess I would say four lag bolts are in your future?
