Can anybody tell me did Ford ever use a 16 spline transmission output shaft?

I 'think' the three speed, open drive transmissions, as found in jailbar pickups, use a 16 spline output shaft.

I've got a 1950 Mercury OD tans and the output is 16 splines.

Ford used a 16 spine out put shaft in the '42-'50 open drive 3 speed pick up transmissions, '50 Mercury transmission and the '51 & '52 pickup 3 speeds. Note: the '42-'50 and the '51 & '52 pickup shafts are not interchangeable as the helical splines are different though the shafts are very similar in appearance.

Later transmissions may also use a 16 spline out put, of those I am not knowledgeable.

Bob C., I assume that that would be a Borg Warner Overdrive (so technically it is the od output shaft, which is what I am trying to deal with) how does the 16 spline shaft attach to the driveshaft?

Svm99, was that transmission ever used with a closed driveline? If I understand correctly Ford/Merc passenger cars used a closed driveline thru ‘49? Pickups went to open drive earlier?

This is a 1949-55 Ford and Mercury driveshaft front yoke.

Ford used to call them the knuckle & plug. That just confuses a lot of folks. Slip Yoke is a more common term now days. There were the 21C ones for open drive pickups with banjo axle and then the 8M & 1M types for Ford & Mercury light duty transmissions beginning in 1949.

A lot depends on what overdrive case was used for the conversion. Ford cases were not preferred due to the long tail shaft. I think the T86 transmission type rear case was preferred due to the shorter overall length. These things were used on the makes that evolved into AMC in later years for light duty applications. Ford also used the T86 but that started in the Y-block era for light duty applications. I don't even know if I could ID what the OP has if a photo was posted but someone might recognize it.

A person needs to know the diameter and the spline count to be more accurate. A person could pin and weld a spine adapter to the stub shaft but it has to fit the overdrive output spine. I hate guessing about stuff like this.

The transmission was the same internally, just a different output shaft with closed driveline through ‘48, 6 spline instead of the 16 spline with open drive.

I may be wrong but I’m beginning to think that a 16 Spline Yoke tube (with yoke cut off) was welded to a 6 spline coupling to create the piece I am looking for.
