T-170 questions

I have a t-170 and a NP242J and I need to know if the main shaft from a T-176 will fit in the T170. I need to go from 31 spline to 23 spline.

I know this is going to generate some questions so here are some answers.
4x4 conversion
Flathead ford with hogshead to 1986 bronco t170
Original motor Not the original trans or TC
Was no planing on using the np242 but the other TC wont fit.
All the TC I can find that will fit are 21 23 or 25 spline.

I have asked around and keep getting steered to the ford barn as its really an oddball question.

Generating questions is fine. That's part of what a forum is for. I'm interested in what you're trying to accomplish. And welcome to The 'Barn!

The ONLY 23-spline output shaft (main shaft) that I'm familiar with is the '80-'86 CJ Jeeps 4 X 4 unit that bolts onto the rear of a Borg-Warner T5. 23-splines is a real oddball, as it is used to bolt-up to a Dana 300 transfer case in the Jeeps. Here you can see the short Jeep version that we married to a '83-'87 close ratio T5 out of a V8 Camaro, to end up as short as it appears here. We did this to be able to adapt to an early Ford torque tube drive line. Sorry I can't answer your original question.

Re: T-170 questions

What I trying to achieve is the easiest least costly way to join a t170 to an np242.
Why? Cost. I have a bunch of time and money tied up in this build and at this point the biggest hurdle is getting a transfer case joined to the transmission. The original plan was to use the np208 that came with the t170. I was assured by some on another forum that the 208 would fit but its too wide but thats a whole other story. So now I am down to a few transfer cases that will fit and only 2 non electronic. The np231 or np242.
I could just use a t176 ($1k more) but I really want to use the t170 ($130 more) if the shaft fits

23 spline is a CJD thing not the mad cow one the chrysler jeep dodge one.

Re: T-170 questions

I have asked jeep people, emailed trans builders who offer build service and or adapter parts for jeeps and was surprised that 2 of the jeep builders said to ask on the ford barn as they thought it was more of a ford question even though the t170 and t176 came out in jeeps.
I might have to be the pioneer on this one and buy the shaft and do a course on transmission building.

Brother, I have no idea. You are far ahead of me. Never got into 4X4.

Maybe glance over this site - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php

I am trying to add overdrive and add 2wd etc to a Marmon-Herrington style fulltime 4x4 conversion

Re: T-170 questions

T170 RTS TOD was used in Ford pickups & Broncos but not for very long. Most transmissions with a married transfer case are limited in what they will fit. Tremec made the TOD for Ford down in Mexico but they are somewhat power limited. The 351 Windsor was about the largest application Ford used them with.

The T176/7/8 were mostly Jeep applications. They are a bit more robust since they don't have the shift rocker set up in them to transfer the shift from 3rd to overdrive like the T170 types do. The rocker reverses the way the shift fork moves due to the way they had to place the overdrive in the case. The T170 RTS types haven't been in production for a long time so parts are getting harder to find as folks use them for Model As and early Ford V8 applications.

My thought is BW has to have catalog(s) to ID a part and give sizing info. FORD TRUCK has this but only for FORD BUILT.

What you are doing has to be expensive and no use buying components on a guess.

I personally never got as far as you want to go and I see no one here coming to the batters box either. There has to be someone at H.A.M.B. or FTE that has this information.

Re: T-170 questions

It might be easier to see if there is any interchangeability between the Ford NP208 and the Jeep NP424J. I have the book on the Ford-Tremec TOD & SROD transmissions and there is a lot of differences between the T176 designs and the T170. The overdrive mainshaft is different too. The T176 is very short and wide in the back compared to the 4X4 T170 TOD.

Re: T-170 questions

Looks like I might have to just use a t176 and have no overdrive.

Re: T-170 questions

What vehicle with MH drive train are we looking at here? MH started playing with Fords in 1935 or so and they modified the Ford differentials with their own steering design.

Re: T-170 questions

Does the output shaft of a T176 fit directly into a T170 without any modifications ?
I have a T170 that I shortened and the machine shop screwed up the splines. I'd like to put a T176 shaft and use that instead.
