Allstate voltage regulator Does anyone know if a
Sears Adjustable Voltage Regulator No. 1431 is 6 or 12 volt? If 12 volt, and used in a 6 volt system, is that a problem? Thanks |
Re: Allstate voltage regulator Probably better to use a NAPA 6V Ford regulator. Tractor Supply probably has them too.

Re: Allstate voltage regulator I use a O'Reilly regulator as they have a life time warranty if you keep the box.

Re: Allstate voltage regulator That looks like something Macs would sell ! Does it say "bummer on highway" ?

Re: Allstate voltage regulator Very nice wallhanger!

Re: Allstate voltage regulator Might have been something J. C. Whitney sold back in their heyday too.

Re: Allstate voltage regulator look on back-some have the voltage printed there

Re: Allstate voltage regulator That is a six volt GM regulator, I recognize the mounting . Had on on my 46 chev pickup. The Idea was you would be driving slower and using all your electrics in the winter and need a bit more cold start power. I summer mode just the opposite. Did it make a difference ? I don't know, I never turned the knob. Tim

Re: Allstate voltage regulator Hello. Appreciate the "helpful", non snarky response. Tinkering with my stock Model A charging system using a '57 Ford, 2 brush generator(didn't want to go the alternator route), and hid a typical voltage regulator up, under the gas tank. While it is unseen, it is also hard to get to. This Allstate, with the external knob, would make adjustment easy. Sounds like you are pretty confident on the 6 voltage. Also, would it have been positive ground? Thanks
|
Re: Allstate voltage regulator Be careful, Ford generators and GM generators are wired differently. On the fords the field needs to be energised, on a GM it needs to be grounded. If your generator was a 57 it would be 12v so this device wouldn't probably work anyway.
|
Re: Allstate voltage regulator When did Ford go to 2 brush generators? I may have the year wrong, but it is a 6 volt, positive ground. I have used it for many years with no issues. Thanks
|
Re: Allstate voltage regulator Not sure when they started (38 ish???) but I believe Ford went 12V in 56. Certainly by 57 they were 12V.

Re: Allstate voltage regulator Ah, so mine is at least early 50's. Thanks

Re: Allstate voltage regulator 1 Attachment(s)
Hello. I am looking at this regulator for a 6 volt, positive ground project. The label says NEG, but it also says to "push the button before starting engine" to polarize. Does that mean it can be polarized to a positive ground? Thanks
|
Re: Allstate voltage regulator These type units were not received well. They were terrible at holding set voltage. Blue streak didn't sell the adjustable voltage units very long but they kept the polarize button quite a while. They always look new because folks would remove them pretty soon after realizing that they didn't work well. They were conversation pieces after that and not in a good way.

Re: Allstate voltage regulator Im not sure why you want to adjust your regulator. What am I missing here? I would recommend you go to a NAPA or like store and buy a quality part and be done with it. Tim
