:) I like the slower pace of two lane paved roads but very much enjoy traveling the gravel with the '41 Merc. Usually 30-40 mph or so depending on conditions...sometimes at a crawl over rough rutted stuff, sometimes 50+ on a smooth graded piece. Here's this morning's 40 mile tour of local lanes. About 12 degrees F here today in Kansas with a stiff N breeze. The OE Ford heater was nice and toasty though.

My 41 tudor takes the speed bumps better than my wife Lincoln Aviator. Even she agrees . Cornering, not so much .

Haha! Yes, I agree...but you have to pick the high points, right? :D And the '41 makes you (and her) look SO good.:)

My dad taught me to drive his '41 Chevy on a gravel road!

Those cars were built for those kind of roads! Thanks for those nice shots.

We were 12 degrees on the other side of zero for a "high" today so no engines started unless absolutely necessary. My only concern about gravel roads is the chance of getting yet another stone chip in the 52 Merc's windshield. I avoid the heavily travelled ones and every now and then hit the two lane blacktop so the old Merc can stretch it's legs a little. :)

There are a couple of 40 mph straightaways on this 57 sq mile island. We don't have a stoplight yet. Old truck heaven if there ever was one.....I have gone as much as a full year without ever going 'over town'. (the mainland) Every year in August I get together at the old engine/gas/steam/tractor/threshing event in Lynden Wa. and set up for 4 days with the same bunch of guys that I met there 36 years ago. All the guys my age have now been retired for 5 or 10 years from Boeing, the Naval Shipyard, big construction or whatever. Me, I still work regular hours. When I find myself feeling envious of their retirement income and freedom, it helps me to remember my short walk from home to shop, always leaving our keys in the ignition, and having my 4 kids around me while they grew up and realize I didn't have to wait til I was older to have miles and miles of two lane road to enjoy. My country roads are the only roads I have and I know how blessed I have been to drive them for most of my adult life.

Thanks for the pics Terry ! Back roads for us, even in the late model. Old Fords like back roads. Best heaters in the world. Dad had a Packard & mom had a Ford. Ford heater was BEST!!!!
