Wrong E-Brake Handle from Snyder's?

2 Attachment(s)
I ordered an E-brake handle, A-2780-C from Snyder's for my 1929 Model A. My E-brake handle is located to the right of the gearshift. The box was marked A-2780-C.

Can someone confirm if the handle I received is an A-2780-A?

Thanks!

John D.

Did you call Snyder’s to inquire ? They are indeed very helpful! Wayne

The picture you show for the new handle is correct for a 30-31 with the E brake handle on the right. In the "used" looking picture the ratchet is installed up-side down.

Ford change the ratchet to finer teeth around August 1930.

Snyder's is closed on Saturday and Sunday according to their website. I sent them an email with pics.

Thanks!

If you look on page A-108 of Snyder's parts manual, you will see the same handle which is the pushbutton style of the in-front brake handle (I think), part number A-2780-A. My old handle was working okay so I doubt anything is installed upside-down. If it were, it wouldn't work at all in any application.

My 1929 was built in late '29 and uses the A-2780-C which is the only handle not pictured in the parts manual. Snyder's needs to show a picture of all three handles.

Thanks,

John D.

"31tudor" has it right, the old handle has the ratchet installed incorrectly, the new one is correct.

Another vote that the ratchet is incorrect on the old one.

Upside down, really.

The ratchet teeth are down on the used handle if you look at the picture.

Re: Wrong E-Brake Handle from Snyder's?

Everyone, if you look at the parts manual, there are 3 part numbers. An A, B and C. "A" and "B" are pictured. I believe "C", which is late '29 and 30-31 is not. I believe they put an "A" handle in a box marked "C". Both apparently have push-buttons.

Thanks everyone for their input.

Re: Wrong E-Brake Handle from Snyder's?

The earlier "pistol grip" and "pushbutton" handles are of course designed to be applied to the "lay shaft front" arrangement of the brake linkage. A VERY different arrangement.

Even the 30-31 repops differ somewhat from an original 30-31 handle. I particularly remember differences in how the top portion is "crimped" to the lower handle portion. Not that the repops are dramatically wrong - but they would get bagged in fine point.

Most of us - including me - are not compelled to that world. But glad that it exists.

I take comfort in knowing the differences, which puts our hobby far ahead of the "Rick Freeman" level of restoration.

Snyders A and B handles are the ones mounted in front of the shift lever.
Totally different than the one you have.

The handle on the left painted black is for a 32 Ford. The other is correct for 29-31.

This handle was in my 29 ccpu that should have had a 3-speed with the handle in front of the tower.

But it had a 4-speed transmission with a casting date on the tower in 1931.

So I believe this handle to belong on a '31 or newer....

Re: Wrong E-Brake Handle from Snyder's?

There were four different E-brake levers in the 1928 and 1929 production. The left side pistol grip was first followed by the front & center pistol grip lever. The front & center push button came later and was followed by the right side mounted push button lever. Ford changed the whole emergency brake system as many times as the levers. The last version of the right side lever was carried through to the end with only one minor upgrade to make the pawl and sector a bit beefier. This final lever would have been a replacement part for earlier ones that were right side mounted since it was also used in the 1932 model B & V8 vehicles.

Re: Wrong E-Brake Handle from Snyder's?

I want to apologize to everyone. Being so sure my old handle was original to the car, I turned my brain off. After more research and everyone's help, I looked at the installation again and it appears the new handle will fit. However, the E-brake system clevis does not align with the new handle by about 3/8". I will have to adjust the left and right E-brake linkages that connect to the E-brake cross shaft. Well, it was a good discussion anyway.

Thank you rotorwrench! This all makes sense now.
