Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy 4 Attachment(s)
Kinda boring as winter sets in all dreary and damp. For most winters I have an exciting build in progress, but nothing big shaking this year, so I said to myself "How about finishing some of the details on past projects that I just wasn't happy with?" I tend to get a bit excited when creating these things and grab a piece of scrap tubing or bar stock to tack something together 'for now' and give it a test. Well, it worked out so now onto the next hurdle. The Foyota has actually been quite a succesful 'hybrid, ok(mutt)' of toyota chassis/engine/drivetrain with jailbar sheet metal. So much so that I have been motivated to alter the areas that bother me most about the initial design and build. Lord knows there are more than a few.
First item was the 1"x2"x1/8" rectangular steel tube that supports the plywood floor in the cockpit. This runs between the front and rear fenders above the running board. In profile it has the appearance of joining the front and rear sections of the vehicle together, but that job is done very well by the hidden fully boxed frame. The 1x2 just always looked too small and light for it's job as the rocker panel. A friend had a 7' piece of 3"x4"x1/8" rectangular steel tubing. Unfortunately I had to rip it lengthwise to make my two 49" pieces of channel which applied over the smaller channel. I also wanted to space it outboard a half inch as the suburban 3rd row seat was an inch too wide and I had to put nuts behind my safety rail as spacers. Hokey.... I welded 1/2" spacers to the small tubing and welded the new channel on top, cutting the rear fenders to accept it to pass through. The rear braces for the seat were crudely made and going in the wrong direction and not secured well at the bottom. I made some tabs from 1/4" bar stock and new straps and am happy with progress so far. Need some patches on the running boards next and a few other things in this area, but there are more weekends ahead. Some Pics |

Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy Nice job as usual GB. How did you rip the tube, torch or you got one of those new fangled metal cutting skill saws? No fancy saw here, but I am very good with a torch. problem is on a long cut like that the heat will cause the tube to move, and make your guide move out of place too.

Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy Looks mo betta. You're one of those guys that HAS to tinker on something or go crazy aren't you? I think I got that gene as well.
I like your work. Both on Fords and the "other" stuff too. Scott |
Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy You got that right Scotty! No 'normal' activities fill that void..... Genetic condition for sure.

Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy Giving the complexity of what would be involved I guess a more vintage looking steering wheel is out of the question? But considering the fact that I removed the broken driver's window in my '39 p/u 2 years ago and still haven't gotten around to replacing it (even though I have a new one) I've got no room to suggest anything. The upgrade looks great, as always.

Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy I kept the wheel for sentimental reasons… my kids drove this old wagon to high school. My daughter Molly who is all of 5’ tall and like 105 lbs loved that car and her friends called her ‘Teeny tiny Molly with the great big wheel’ Oh and I ripped the 3x4 tube with one of those fancy skilsaws for metal. Last time Used it It list half of it’s carbide teeth and after this go ‘round quite a few more.

Makes perfect sense. |
Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy Pardon the misspelling I see here but I am replying by way if cellphone and this is the first time I have dine fordbarn on a phone. My fingertips are about 50 % scar tissue and often hit two keys at once….. Cellphone because we are in a motel on the mainland as I have a ‘procedure’ that is scheduled early tomorrow morning and the early ferry isn’t early enough. I’m fine… Just one of those procedures we are supposed to get at about 50 that I put off til 70. Oops gotta run, it’s time for another glass of my ‘cocktail’……
|
Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy GB, good luck with your “procedure” tomorrow. I like the update to the side rails also.
|
Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy There was a cartoon a couple of months ago stating that since it was October, the patient had his choice between a regular "procedure" and a pumpkin spice "procedure."
|
Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy Pete, thst is hilarious!
|
Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy The prep is worse than the actual procedure but regardless there is nothing lightly about the "Go Lightly" cocktail.

Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy Some of those “procedures “.....can be a real pain in he ass!!......hope it all “goes” well....Mark

Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy Prayers for all the best on "the proceedure" thing.
|
Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy flatford8 X 2
When I had my procedure down, when the doctor lifted my gown. "I said do you recognize me now?" |
Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy Doc hands a guy a prescription for suppositories and says to put one of these in your rectum at night before bed and you’ll be great in the morning. Couple days later guy returns to talk and says there’s been no difference. “OK says doc, take 2 at night… Three days later guy goes back to the doc and doc asks if he followed his instructions to the letter…. “Well pretty much, but I couldn’t find any rectum so i put them in my postum and for all the good they did me I might as well have shoved them up my ass”…. Sheesh, now I’ll probably be Branded like CharlieNY and Chuck Conners….. Sorry for all the off topic, and off color but It’s so boring on the mainland, nothing to fix. In the ferry line now and will return to our regularly scheduled forum soon after!

Re: Winter upgrades to the Jailbar Jalopy The only good thing about being over 80 is that you usually don't have to go thru "the procedure" any more.
They just give up on you. |
