48 merc bumpers

I don't seem to be able to find bumpers for my 48 convertible. I know the look between ford and merc bumpers is different, but will 48 ford bumpers bolt to my merc?

Not an expert but '48 Fords and Mercs were the same in many ways. To your question, the frames were the same (except for 4" longer Merc) and the bodies were very similar so I would guess that the bumpers and brackets would be interchangeable.
Before buying anything, just take some measurements of the mounting holes and overall length and compare.

Ford bumpers will not work as they have 4 holes to mount the bumper to the brackets which includes the uprights but the Mercury bumper has a total of 6 holes, 2 for the mounting brackets and one hole for the upright. See photos. The bumper needs new chrome and I do not have the uprights but it is for sale. PM me if interested.

whatdoyouwant - If you have an Australian 1946-1948 Mercury, the Ford Bumpers will fit, as these were the Bumpers that were fitted locally. Some some strange reason, Ford Australia never assembled a 1946-1948 Mercury with the correct Mercury Rear Bumpers. Check out the photo of a very original Australian 1948 Mercury Sedan. Otherwise, the Ford and Mercury Bumpers will not interchange.

I suspect the Ford bumpers will work, but you would also need to use the Ford bumper brackets. There's probably a 42-48 Ford in your area to get measurements to compare to your Merc.

Re: 48 merc bumpers

I purchased a 1946 Mercury Sedan back in 1966, and back then, I was unaware that the rear bumper on my Mercury was not a Mercury. That changed when I joined the Early Ford V8 Club of America in 1969. I then realised that my Australian 1946 Mercury had the incorrect rear Bumper. My brother spent 3 months touring the USA back in 1972 and that was when I asked him to look out for a correct rear Bumper for my car, which he did. When it arrived "down under", I removed the original Ford Bumper then realised that one of the bolt holes didn't line up. I tried to drill a new hole, but kept breaking Drill Bits as the Bumper Irons are Hardened Steel. I called a mate and he blew new holes with an Oxy. I also got my brother to locate the correct Bumper Guards, as once again, all Australian 46-48 Mercurys had Ford Bumper Guards. My 46 Mercury with the correct rear Mercury Bumper looked a treat. So there you have have it.

For those that like trivia, here are two comparison shots of Australian 1946 - 1948 Ford and Mercury Bumper Guards. Notice how the inside of the Mercury Bumper Guard has been cut to suit the different profile of the Mercury Bumper. Also note that this style of Bumper Guard was fitted to all 1946 - 1948 Fords and Mercurys.
Australian assembled Fords never got the updated Bumper Guards.
You never stop learning about old Fords.

Back when I was into old Jags, I remember those pieces were referred to as, "Over-riders".
Sort of makes sense when you think of how they would work if involved in a fender bender.
