Game changing tool: Bolt Buster heat induction tool
 

I recently purchased a heat induction tool made by Bolt Buster. Main reason I went with Bolt Buster is the tool is made in the USA. I really bought it for an off topic reason, but thought I give it a go on the head studs of a super rusty 99A block I have that's due for a tear down.

I ran the tool over one bank of studs. Took 15 secs. per stud (not a typo) for the stud to get cherry red. I moved on to the next one and so forth. By the time I was done, the studs I heated first backed out of the block like they were just put in.

I couldn't believe it. Removing studs use to be a 1-2 day job. I was able to do one bank in 30 minutes start to finish.

I'm going to do the other bank over the Christmas break, but so far this tool has been a game changer. It use to take 4-5 minutes per stud using the oxy-acetylene torch. It would sometimes take two or three times hitting them with the torch.

I also used a brand of penetrating oil I never used before called Free All. It seems to work better than Kroil. The threads of all the studs were actually wet showing the oil got in there.

Sounds like I need one! How about the price of filling those oxygen and acetylene tanks? Seems one of them is always getting low, and it's 90% from heating bolts etc to cherry red. Maybe I can drop a hint to Mrs. Claus. I noticed she's been putting in a lot of hours at work :)
Edit: Yikes I just saw the price. Maybe my shop account needs to buy it.

I saw a tool like this at NAPA. Not sure of the brand. Looks like a handy item to have in the shop when working on old iron. Only disadvantage I could see wold be it migh not fit into some tight areas like on a frame or be at right angle in tight area??

The probes or coils can be bent in any shape or angle you need. It's designed to allow you to get into tight spaces.

There are $100 versions made by off shore companies, so there is a price point for most folks. Truth be told, I bought it because I was sloppy/careless and burnt a hole in the CV boot on my wife's daily trying to get the sway bar links off when I did her struts.

Fixing that collateral damage was enough to have me spend the $$$ to be able to work on our daily drivers without using the torch.

The road brine they use in NJ is destroying our cars.

Don't think so. You would need a super huge coil to wrap around the metal. Its inducting whatever is inside of the heating coil.

400. is certainly worthwhile if the tool is to get used. would be nice to compare the 100. model.

That sure looks like a time saver. Could be a life saver not having to use torch under cars.

If there is anything that should be outlawed to me it is road brine! The damage that stuff causes is insidious.

Tim, did you get the 110v or 220v that made light work of those studs? In the BB video the guy never mentions a 220 v model.

Too bad they didn't have this tool back in the days I was building engines. Every time I saw a 59 or earler block come into the shop, I knew it was going to ba a long hard day!!!!!

110v. The one I got is the “improved” version. Says 2x the power. I’ll list the model # in a bit.

This is one tool I think I'd take a chance on getting imported one if there is enough difference in price. These things work by high-frequency electricity, so they are essentially an electronic device. There are good reasons that almost all electronic devices are imported.

Haha. Sure thing. Ron, it's a real game changer. Plus, never worrying about running out of gas before the job is finished.

Next time I come up, I'll bring it. I couldn't believe how well it worked.

Comes with a 1 year warranty and Bolt Buster offers reasonable support if things go wrong with it after the year.

Got one about a year ago from eBay, I used it to heat a few items
I needed to bend, haven’t gotten around to use it on head studs yet.
