35/36 Gredhound Dog Ornament
 

While watching an old movie made in 1937 on AMC, they show a 36 coupe with a greyhound dog on the front. I did not realized they had the greyhound for 35/36. I thought it was only for 34 and the ones you see today are just a reproduction taken from the 34's. Has anybody ever seen an original 35/36 greyhound. Do they have a part number on them like the 34's and is the tail free standing.

Ford did not offer a greyhound after 1934. All the later ones you see are aftermarket (Western Auto, etc).

Actually Stant did produce & market the greyhound for 1935 & 36 Fords. A prototype was commissioned by Ford for 1935 but they then decided not to proceed seeing how the radiator cap was now hidden away. Stant decided, with approval, to market the greyhound on its own as they had designed the different mounting to the '34 design.
The tail was low like '34, this was positioned by hand when still warm from the mould.
They were made of zinc alloy as were the Model A quails, so very difficult to repair.
The modern era reproductions have been made from stainless steel. It is perfectly legal to copy the old originals as all the era patents have lapsed & dies destroyed.

The first two photos show a 1935 Greyhound ornament, which is different from the one that Flathead Ted and Terry,OH show. This one attaches to the original Ford ornament, rather than replaces it. It is held fast to the ornament by a screw, directly behind the "V8". A set screw, between the rear legs, holds it tight.
The third photo, shows a Greyhound, which might be for a 1936 model, as I do not see how it would attach to my 1935 Ford. It only has a set screw and the base is shorter. I do not have a 1936 Ford to test it on.

I collect old automotive catalogs like Western Auto and Pep Boys; there were LOTS of aftermarket greyhounds, from the very detailed and custom fitted ones shown for '35-6 Fords to ultra-cheapies made at the quality level of lead toy soldiers. Most of the cheap ones simply ended in a stud so they would bolt to whatever you drilled a small hole in...many of these ended up on bicycle fenders and pedal cars.
Vintage schlock fascinates me for some reason...

I have an old V8 club magazine in the 70's which has a full page ad showing Don Summer selling a reproduction dog for the 34, 35 & 36. They were made out of stainless steel and cost $62.50. Anybody got one.

This Canadian advertisement was posted on the old Fordbarn. It would indicate that the Greyhound was offered as "standard" equipment on at least some Canadian models. Looks like the spiders were standard too!

Edit: Whoops, it's not spiders that are pictured it's beauty rings.

I happen to have one of those old Don Sumner Stainless Steel 1934 Ford Greyhounds. It is very special to me. Back then, it would take about two day's salary to buy one, so I only lusted after one. To my suprise, my wife had a friend order one and I received it for my birthday !
...The first three photos show this stainless steel Greyhound, with the free standing tail.
...The next three photos show an original Ford 1934 Ford Greyhound, which has been ground down, back in the day, to fit an "A" Model. You can see the Ford part number.
...The next three photos show a Franklin 1934 Greyhound. You can see that the tail is attached to the leg.
...The next photo shows a 1933 Greyhound, which was also cut down to fit an "A" Model.
... The next photos show a couple broken Greyhounds and my collection of broken dogs.
