A 70+ year old coil & condenser tester in action

I resurrected a long dead Herbrand coil and condenser tester a couple months ago. It works great for testing old coils. But I finally got around to testing some condensers too. This short video shows what happens to the spark when a condensor goes bad.

As my little neighbor used to say, that's "insterding"

I could have used that last week.

I'm an 80+ yo tester of both old & new stuff. Here's a short video of the tester inaction.

I forgot to mention that the condenser being tested reads almost double what it should - .469mfd.

Given all the distributor, coil and other work I do with ignitions, would love to have that test unit. I have a distributor machine, old-school condenser tester, but nothing like what you have that is a good bench tester. Now I need to go find one! LOL

You will be following in my footsteps - lol! A few months ago I saw a video of one, so I started looking. You can see how dirty and rough it was. The wiring was shot, the vibrator coil didn't work and the internal condenser was out of spec. But with help from some guys on the antique radio forum, I was able to rewire and repair it. They are quite simple on the inside.

If anybody happens to see one . . . let me know!

I have my fathers old WW2 multimeter. I must dig it out and see if it still works.

That's neat, Steve. Subbed ya. Here's to 1K.

Thanks for posting that. It is good to visually see what a bad condenser does to the spark output.
