Yellow antifreeze

Any reason not to use the yellow antifreeze in our a’s ?? Wally World doesn’t have green in my area with cold weather coming on I drained it and now have located the premix stuff cheap but it’s yellow….

Why not use it. Its still anti-freeze. I'd recommend pulling a hose loose and flushing both the block and radiator. One never knows what junk is hiding in there and it doesn't take long to do. Pour in the new stuff and away you go.

Does it make any difference what hose I pull loose? First a not sure

I would recommend getting the green stuff and if you can't, then go "green" with pet and paint friendly Lotox or Sierra.

Just not a good idea to use the orange stuff. I did by mistake,
and changed it out with green Prestone. More importantly, always
use distilled water if you have to mix it.

Use only green ethylene glycol (IAT - Inorganic Additive Technology) antifreeze in your Model A, such as Zerex original green. The use of most modern (OAT - Organic Additive Technology) “extended life” antifreeze will attack copper, brass and solder present in older cooling systems. There are many articles out there warning of this.

Zerex was yellow, Prestone was green.

Hi Bill, I just bought a case of it for my Model A, Model T and Mustang. It’s Zerex and it’s definitely green.

I picked up a couple gallons of full-strength "Universal" antifreeze at O'Reillys the other day and put it in my 31 (diluted, of course). It's not green, yellow or red - it's clear (maybe a slight yellowish tinge)! I'll swap it out for the green if that's necessary but does anyone know anything about this stuff?

Sorry about the delayed response I’m just going to go to local parts house and buy the old green stuff they’re mom and pop anyway and I prefer to do business with them. About a year ago I needed an oddball belt for an antique tractor and it was Sunday so they were closed I went to the “chain” store and showed them the old belt and even gave them the size , they REFUSED to look it up as “we don’t sell tractor parts “ in a farming community. Haven’t been back since these guys tell ‘‘em what you need and it will appear on the counter in a minute

Oh UPS, don't get me going on parts houses (orielys).

The other day i went and asked the kid for a 12" braided battery ground cable. He said what is the make and model of the car? i said no particular make and model that is the cable I need. He said sorry if I cant look it up i can not get it. I said cant you go back and look where you keep your battery cables? He said not without the make and model. i said its for a 29 Ford Model A. He said oh, our books don't go that far back. GEEEEZ.

I went across the street and asked for a 12" braided battery cable (federated auto parts) and the guy said, I will be back in 20 seconds, i know exactly where they are. He was back in 15 seconds and i was out in 30 seconds.

Does it say Ethylene Glycol on the label? What does it say after "contents"?

Re: Yellow antifreeze

The OReilly universal antifreeze is definitely Ethylene Glycol based. Ethylene Glycol is clear, but the dye additives give it whatever color the mfg wants it to be. The OReilly stuff is a light yellow color. I have a gallon here and checked the label.

I still remember when we used to get the Xerex in one gallon cans and used a church key to open them. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that did that.

When I worked in my Dads shop in the 50s you had a choice between permanent anti freeze or alcohol. Alcohol boiled off and you had to keep adding to it. Permanent cost twice as much but you didn't have to add to it. The only two brands at that time were Zerex (yellow) and Prestone(green).
