Soot from tailpipe at startup.
 

Had a carburetor rebuilt by Charlie NY awhile back. No problems there as it runs just fine, but at startup I get a lot of black soot from tailpipe that I didn’t have before. What needs to be adjusted ? I’ve emailed Charlie a couple times, but no responses.

Perhaps it's carbon that has built up over time inside the muffler and is now blowing out a little at a time a start up.

Maybe less choke and/or accelerator pumping at startup would help?

Mike I've had the same experience with black sooty water coming out the pipes on startup. I think it's caused by too rich a mixture on startup and as noted above it could be an accumulation from the time before I installed my Charlie rebuilt carb because now, I'm not getting the discharge.

I got that same vary black soot and water. It got much better when I switched to non ethanol. Tim

I had a similar issue on my 37. I do all my own carb work, so after rebuilding my carb with no real change, I went through the ignition. I had skip rebuild my coil and had Michael at Third Gen rebuild my 11A distributor. Replaced the plug wires and condenser. This got rid of the sooty discharge and cleaned up the plugs to a normal color. Runs great now and no more sooty discharge on my garage floor. Nate

Morning Guys …..

I run non ethanol fuel in my ‘40. It’s called recreational fuel in northern Michigan. I didn’t pump the gas but a couple times and didn’t choke as much and it seems to not smoke as much now.

Huckster I did the very same thing with rebuilt card, rebuilt distributor and rebuilt coil !

I’m going out this morning so I’ll check it again.

I have the same black soot spot wherever I start up the truck leaves a black stain 4-5" diameter on the gravel driveway.

What’s normal setting for idling screws ? One full turn or 1 1/2 turns or maybe that doesn’t make a difference ?

Mike - do you have a vacuum gauge? These work great to set up a carb, and also timing.

1 1/2 turns is a good place to start.

What ……. No I don’t have a vacuum gauge but probably should get one just to have. I don’t pump the accelerator but a couple times now and it seems to have worked. I also turned screws back a half turn. Seems to have helped a lot.

I started my Sedan recently and inadvertently left the choke full on. It started instantly then died. I restarted but there was a hell of a lot of black sooty smoke from at as it struggled to run.

Once I realised what I had done I opened the choke and all was back to normal.

If using choke to start as soon as it starts take as much choke off as you can and get it fully off as soon as possible.

Re the idle mixture screws. 1-1/2 turns is a rough guide to get you started. They should be adjusted to achieve a smooth idle. One might be 1/2 turn in, the other might be 1/4 turn in. They should be adjusted with the engine running. The vacuum gauge method is ideal but just getting it so it sounds as good as you can is ok too. There isn't any fits all setting that would be perfect for every engine and carb.

It sounds like you have it ok now.
