36 ford pu Transmission problems?

I have a completely stock 36 ford pickup the trans # and frame # are the same. I was backing it out of the garage the other day and when I put it in low gear to move forward the left rear wheel completely locked up and it would not move forward, I put it in reverse, and it moved backwards ok then again in low & it locked up again. I then put it in 2nd gear and was able to drive forward into the garage. Sense then I put it on jack stands with the back wheels off the ground and started it and ran through all the gears and everything shifted and ran through all the gears just fine over and over again. Today I backed it out of the garage again and it locked up the left back wheel again and would not move until I put it 2nd and pulled it into the garage again. Does anybody have any Idea what is going on? Thanks for any ideas

If I had that same problem with my 35 Ford, I'd be disconnecting the rear and rolling it back from under the car, and checking it internally for possible problems. Then I would remove the transmission and thoroughly go through its internals for possible problems.

You know, I knew you guys would probably say that and that is my next step.
:( I have already made an appointment to take it in and get it checked out. I don't have the garage space to do it myself and I am too old to get under there and do it any more with a bad back and 2 shoulder joint replacements. I was just hoping you might say change the oil in the rear end, adjust the emergency brake cable, and whistle dixie and it will be fine. :D Thanks for confirming what I already knew.

Re: 36 ford pu Transmission problems?

Since I first posted this question the first of the month the truck has been setting in the garage with the emergency brake off. Today I wanted to move it so I started it up and backed it out of the garage and it moved forward no problem in first gear. I kept backing it and pulling forward in first gear with no lockups. My question: is it possible that the emergency brake was stuck from sitting to long the first time and if it was stuck why did it move backwards out of the garage but not forward. Any Ideas!

All things are possible. Just keep driving it as long as it's working.

Emergency brake should NEVER be applied when in for long term storage, the shoes can rust tight to the drum. Probably the reason it would go backward but not forward is that reverse is a lower gear ratio so it was able to over power the stuck brake shoes

Thanks for the replies to my question guy's I really appreciate it, makes me feel better. I am going to take Lawson Cox's advise and just keep driving it as long as it works.

if you have any moisture in your garage, the brake shoes can swell.......

had that happen on my 51 chevy tin woody.

I had a similar problem on my 33 Tudor on right rear wheel. Problem was brake shoe got out of line with roller cam and seized on drum. Had a heck of a time getting drum off until I loosened shoe via brake adjuster . Kind of a surprise. Da !
