Original emblem repair or not

I have the V8 emblem for my 38 Ford truck and it has a crack in it. What are thoughts on this? Can it be repaired? Is it worth it cost wise repairing to keep an original or get a reproduction or leave it alone and don't worry about it?

If your truck is a driver I would use it as is. Those emblems are pot metal and difficult/expensive to repair. If your truck is restored, I'd consider using a reproduction one.

I had a restored center grill bar on my 38 DeLuxe, and paid a gentleman good money to trade for his original with original blue paint and pitted chrome. I consider original to be more desirable than the prettiest repop or restored piece.

I absolutely use original everything. If you desire new China on your V8, that's up to you

There are some very high grade epoxies out there that will do the job, getting a small dab that you need will be the tough part. Price will be very high, see if you can find someone that works in factory maintenance may be able to find something.

It would be possible to "V-cut" a very slight bevel on the OEM piece crack, solder with special pot metal solder and then copper plate the entire emblem. Then follow up with chrome plating. Pot metal can be difficult to "save" as it has lots of internal pitting that you can't see. There are no guarantees.

Peruse these sites:

A few years ago I had Custom Metal Finishing in Hagerstown, IN repair and plate a pot metal steering wheel pieces and they turned out PERFECT. You might want to give them a call. Read this on HAMB first.

Just fill the back side V with J B Weld. Be sure to really clean the area first. Do not press too hard on the cracked area as it could break off.

Good luck trying to find a reproduction. I would contact the fellas @ Vintage vehicles in Wautoma, will probably come back better than new. Yes it is always worth repairing/restoring an original piece.

Let us Know how you fix that. You could always just put in a plain center strip and tell every one it's a 39:rolleyes:
