Gas tank

Am not confident with my fuel gauge. Would like to make a stick with inches. Would I hit the float sticking it, do you put anything on the stick to see the fuel level and how many gallons per inch

Use a dowel etc for stick won't hurt float. I used some flat stock aluminum etched in amounts

Re: Gas tank

It helps to know what year of tank. The 28-29 tanks will measure differently than those of 30-31 model years. Somewhere in the Fordbarn archives is an entry describing a measuring stick made of wood dowel and the corresponding inch levels per gallon of fuel specific to the 30-31 Ford tanks.

One could drain the tank, add a gallon at a time and make corresponding marks.

Question on why everyone makes it complicated. Not being argumentative either. I filled my tank and used a wood dowel used to support small plants I stole from mama. Marked full.. then half..then quarter tank. Just using my eyes to divide the areas on the dowel. It's only 3/16s in diameter and lays in my rumble seat rain gutter just fine. And as my working gas gauge moves (gas being used) I've verified it with dowel. Fairly accurate.

Re: Gas tank

I trust my gauge all the way down to the bottom of the tank. When I install a gauge, I set the float wire to read ) when the float is on the bottom of the tank. Once the gauge reads ), I know I am close to walking. By yanking the steering wheel one way or the other and watching the gauge as whet fuel is left surges from one side to the other, I get a "fine tuned" reading. When I can't get any movement in the gauge, I have only a couple of miles left at most.
Why are you not confident with it?

Re: Gas tank

I replaced my fuel gauge with a re-pop one and it seems to be fairly accurate. If the tank is a true 10gal, which I’ve read it is I think it’s on point. Rebuild kits are only a few $$ though if you want to keep the one you have.

I've gotten pretty good by sound. Tapping the tank gives me a fairly accurate indication of the amount of fuel left.
