Skip Haney - Shout out

The 36 Phaeton I acquired last year showed all of the symptoms of vapor lock due to overheating, and yet a thermal gun showed a maximum of about 160 degrees.

Sure enough, Skip’s rebuild of the coil solved the problem completely (also did water pumps for good measure as original impellers were highly eroded).

For the first time in 9 months, I have the confidence to go for a multi-hour drive.

My sincere thanks to those Forum contributors who pointed me Skip’s way, and to the quality of his work.

Hi Everyone. Funny thing, and I have an impressive load of Mr. Haney's handywork around my yard, but he's doing his thing without the hassle of being a part of the 'Barn.

I've never seen a post from Mr. Haney. I was just thinking where G.M. has been? But I may be late to some news on that front.

I've often mentioned on my posts here that I would not leave the end of my driveway without having a Skip Haney rebuilt coil on the distributor of my '35 Ford. Originally, these coils were wound with magnet wire that had inferior insulation as compared to what's available on today's market. An original coil may work fine initially to get the engine started and your car moving, but once the coil heats up internally, windings begin to short turn to turn until it can no longer deliver enough energy to produce a good ignition spark. At this point, many folks will assume it's a vapor lock problem because as the coil cools, it may function well enough to allow the engine to restart and run well again, but only long enough to allow coil overheating, and shut the engine down again.

Re: Skip Haney - Shout out

The exact symptom I was experiencing and which, thankfully, is now firmly in the rear view mirror.

The Barn is wonderful and makes owning early Fords a true joy.

Thank goodness Skip is still "skipping" right along sharing his talent, knowledge and skill to keep our Fords running.

Wonder how many thousands of "vapor lock" problems over the years, were in fact due to the fragile, heat sensitive, original Ford coil.
